i wonder if anything bad has ever happened to alabama football.

If you ask the locals, they would probably say when Bear Bryant's last all lilly white team made the mistake of scheduling an integrated team from USC.

maybe, but i don't think bear bryant was racist.

He wasn't. He scheduled the game with USC knowing that they would get trounced but also knowing that it was the only way to get the University, it's fans and alumni to let him recruit blacks. It was a very smart move on his part. His "strategy" was featured and documented on an HBO special.

Washington? Georgia Tech?

washington does have some history and so does ole miss, though i'm not sure that anyone cares they uw was great 20 years ago or ole miss was great 50 years ago.

To me, it looks like the biggest flaw in putting together that list is in weighting success equally throughout all time. Winning 50 years ago means just as much as winning this year. If they weighted the list so that more recent success meant more, it'd probably look better.

BTW, the Billingsley computer rankings for top programs all-time has the same top 20 or so (in slightly different order) but very different in the last 5.

His 5 best teams not on this list? Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Stanford, Michigan State, and Wisconsin.

the 4 teams that are on the list he has ranked lower: Colorado at 31, Ole Miss at 32, Clemson at 38, and BYU at 66.

Another thing that affects programs depending on what conference they're in is a bonus for winning the conference title game. So, Big 12, ACC and SEC teams get bumps for that, while Big Ten, Pac-10 and Big East programs get nothing.

Yeah, I get washington has had some prestige in the past, but they've been a joke for a quite a while now. 5 consecutive losing season, no wins last year? I don't see how anybody could say that program has prestige. There's no "wow, Washington Huskies" factor with them. The only thing they have going for them are a couple alums working for ESPN.

yeah i'd say that the inclusions of clemson and byu are the stupidest ones on that list. clemson has won 1 national championship in over 100 years and is a good but not great program these days. byu also has only 1 national championship and while they're very good for a non-bcs program, i don't think they have all that much history.

Mizzou #36 on that list. I'm fairly pleased with that considering the piece of crap program they were from the early 80's until recently (minus '97 and '98, which were solid teams).

The bowl game thing is my issue. IIRC, some conferences only had 1 team going to bowl games for years, while others would send anyone who'd get taken.

The B10 only had one bowl elgible team up until 1975 (The Rose Bowl). Ole Miss and others pilled on bowl points while teams like Iowa, Wisky, MSU, Minny sat at home.

I believe the Pac 10 was much the same way. Notre Dame didn't play in a bowl from 1925-1970.

yeah slowly but surely we have gone from "boy there are too many good teams not getting to play in bowls" to "how on earth did we end up with a northern illinois-louisiana tech bowl game?"

well, Louisiana Tech finished 2nd in their conference and with an 8-5 record. how NIU got a bowl remains a mystery.

Losing Marshall to ASU hurts, but this is still one of the top recruiting classes for Northwestern in the last decade.
