The No. 2 rated prospect in Missouri, Ronnie Wingo, chose Arkansas over Mizzou. That's a bad blow.

I don't see what this has to do with Tennessee's OL coach.

that's COL to you, buddy

Notre Dame lost Nyshier Oliver as another decommit.

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/aroundthebend/

And he's back to Tennessee, where he had originally committed. A bit of a "meh" commitment, to me, but we'll take him.

Word is that Weiss pulled his scholly after he visited UT. So, it's not like UT stole him, though it is entirely possible that ND felt they were losing him anyway, so pulling the scholly looks more like ND cut ties than Oliver.

They were probably losing him, but Weis is still doing his 'if you're looking, we're looking' thing, so it was probably a both-ways move.

Stewart Mandel of SI is whining about Tennessee's spending on assistant coaches - saying it's not fair to schools that don't have the money Tennessee does. He also went on, however, to say that Tennessee will likely profit from this and that they can afford it. So basically, it's just not fair that Tennessee has more money than other schools and should spend according to what FAU and MTSU can afford.

All told, the Vols' assistants will make a combined $3.325 million in '09, shattering the totals at SEC rivals Alabama ($2.405 million), Florida ($2.035 million) and Georgia ($2 million), according to data compiled by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Tennessee is so proud of this feat, it sent out a press release last week listing each assistant's salary.

Coupled with Kiffin's "modest" $2 million salary, Tennessee's total coaching expenditure ($5.325 million) is still only fourth-highest among SEC schools (based on 2008 salaries), behind Alabama, LSU and Florida.

So what's the deal with Damien Thigpen, Tennessee fans?

So what's the deal with Damien Thigpen, Tennessee fans?

From what I understand, Kiffin pulled a Tajh Boyd on him and told him he could come here but he wouldn't play. So now it sounds like Charlie Weiss and ND are hard after him.

Hosak probably has more details, though.

He's visiting UCLA this weekend, Notre Dame in two weekends. Another Notre Dame vs UCLA recruiting battle.

Just strange that Kiffin pulls that stuff with a week to go before signing day.

So what's the deal with Damien Thigpen, Tennessee fans?

This one is causing an uproar among most TN fans. Most people are angry that Thigpen has remained loyal to his UT commitment, and then a week before NSD, Kiffin tells him that he will honor his scholarship offer, but that he doesn't think he'll have much of a chance to compete for playing time in Knoxville.

No one is convinced that he's going to be much of a player. It's the fact that this move seems a bit classless on the part of Kiffin and his staff.

From what I understand, Thigpen has literally ZERO idea what he's going to do. Poor kid is in absolute scramble mode. From some UT fans perspective's, it would seem that Kiffin eaither a) really believes in his system, and knows what type players will work within it, or 2) has a great feeling about a handful of other guys (Marlon Brown, Darren Myles Jr, Janzen Jackson, etc...) or even has a silent commit or two following last weekend.

Tennessee's visit list this week is stellar. Absolutely monster. Of course, no one *expects* to get many LOI's from this group, but people sure are *hoping* to.

Really? Rivals and Scout have him as a 4-star running back.

Rivals lists him as an Athlete, and the 25th best Athlete, at that. I'm not saying he won't be good, but he was an afterthought in this class, as his true position in college is still undetermined. Most thought he'd be a DB at Tennessee, and with names like Myles Jr, and Jackson, and Mike Edwards all being possibilities, Thigpen just didn't seem to fit.

I'm not saying he's not a good athlete. Just saying that those whose opinion is not based on star-gazing have not been entirely sold on him. He's a dime a dozen kind of guy.

Of course, the list of those players who have gone on to star in college football is long and esteemed. I hope the kid goes somewhere he fits in well and is an all conference type player. (Honestly, I hope he comes to UT to prove Kiffin and Co wrong, and that he does so quite successfully.)

Also hearing that Marsalis Teague is a likely get for UT. Florida commit, but it's my understanding that this is a UT/Bama battle.

Gotcha. UCLA is actually stacked with underclassmen at running back (and even corner). But the more speed the better, especially with a porous offensive line. And I'd love to see Neu beat Notre Dame again for a recruit. :)

It's a good thing a certain Bama fan friend of ours isn't an ND fan, because he'd have a very long response to this post.

I hope we get this guy but he probably wouldn't be a RB at ND, since Charlie is averse to ever running the ball (but maybe with our crap OL coach replaced it'll be better).

Hey, UCLA couldn't even beat Notre Dame in their worst season since the Ice Age so I'll have to take the recruiting victories.

Nah man, my days are trying to convey my thoughts about my team in more then a few sentences, if that, are long gone. My answers were be short and to the point. The only thing about ND that I want to see happen is Urban "The Classless Liar" Meyer become the new head coach of that program.

I heard Brent Hubbs saying he thought Teague had a good shot of coming here (and that it was between us and Bama). I like that a lot.

Have you heard anything new on Marlon Brown? Hubbs seemed to think there was a chance we'd get him, but that UGA was still in the running. Not sure if you've heard anything else, but I'd love to get the top two players in Tennessee this year (Eric Gordon and Marlon Brown).

Saw this quoted today and thought it was interesting.

Jeremy Crabtree and his self-proclaimed Magnificent 7 recruiting analysts at Rivals.com are not former Division I, II or even Division III coaches or scouts.

Not one person writing and analyzing players for Rivals.com has ever recruited a player, coached a college player or even signed a player to a letter of intent.

Of those eight gurus who have sucked fans into their sites for $9.95 a month, only one of them ever coached at the high school level.

Jeremy Crabtree is a former sports writer who made recruiting his special beat at the Kansas City Star. Six of the seven gurus he employs are also former sports writers.

I too have heard the battle of Teague is down to UT and Bama.

Andrew Bone of TI (I believe) was adament when he said Alabama has and should pull off a "surprise recruit who is committed to another school." Some speculate the "surprise recruit" could be Teague, or it could be Greg Reid, or could be either Barkevarious Mingo, or even Kenny Bell.

My guess is....with Ed Stinson committing to Bama today, you can eliminate Mingo. So the "surprise recruit" Bone is talking about could be Teague, Reid, or Bell. My money is Teague, but Bama has made up A LOT of ground on Reid in the last couple of weeks so it wouldn't surprise me it is Reid. Personally I think Bama/Tennessee are going to split in their battles for Myles/Teague. I think Bama gets Myles, and Teague goes UT.
