D'Antoni is overrated. He succeded in Phoenix because he had a great PG (Nash) and great players surronding him (Amare, etc).

Don't get me wrong, I would've prefered Pax got him, it's just that he's not the great savior some are claiming he would have been in Chicago. Plus Avery Johnson is still out there, and he fits the Bulls style more than D'Antoni.

The experience thing is overrated. Phil Jackson, Popovich, Rudy T, and Pat Riley, who have accounted for the majority (all but two) of the NBA Championships in the past twenty years won a championship during their first head coaching job. Riley in his first season, Jackson, Popovich, and Rudy T in their second(full) season. These Bulls aren't a championship team, but it's something to think about.

KC Johnson was on Comcast tonight saying the Bulls are pissed because D'antoni didnt even give the Bulls a chance to make a counter offer.

I don't see any way on this planet the Bulls would've given D'Antoni close to that much money. Not sure what the Bulls' beef is.

They're trying to save face, imo. They know the Knicks pulled the rug out from under them.

If D'Antoni holds a press conference and tries to say it isn't about the money, I'll probably throw up a little in my mouth.

I am not that upset about this , unless we lost out b/c Pax didn't have the *you-know-whats* to pull the trigger. Pax has shown consistently over the last several years that his preference for a conservative approach extends to trading his young players. On the other hand, he gives millions in extensions to the least talanted players in that core (Noc and Hinrich). Brilliant.

It seems pretty obvious and I don't see why people that would rip a coach or manager for starting veterans over rookies because they have a "track record" would fall into the same trap when wanting an experienced hire over a guy that has done well as an assistant. Fresh ideas are a good thing. D'Antoni would naturally do the things that have worked for him in the past and not as likely to adjust his style to personnel as a coach who is getting his first shot.

It is pretty funny that people were talking about the Suns trying to "lure" Doug Collins to take the job. C'mon, there have to be a dozen top assistants that can do as good or better job. People get too hung up on the name guys that get hyped in the media because it will "energize" the fan base.

Well now I'm starting to hear disturbing talk that the Bulls might simply pluck some assistant from somewhere and make him the coach.

Terrible, if that indeed happens. Unless it's some kind of phenom, which seems unlikely.

Yeah, why give some new guy a shot when you can rehash a coach that has failed somewhere else. I mean, if someone has had a head coaching job and been fired he automatically must be better than a guy that has put in the time as an assistant and hasn't gotten an opportunity yet to prove himself.

I never said he would automatically be better. But hey, why miss an opportunity to prove how witty and sarcastic you can be?

Sorry, but I thought that someone saying it was "disturbing" and "terrible" that the Bulls might hire an assistant instead of someone without a so called proven track record deserved some sarcasm.

I dont know KC Johnson isnt one that makes excuses for Pax, or the Bulls. He said that from everything he heard, Reinsdorf has told Pax that money wont really be a factor, but that Reinsdorf is hesitant to give out another 4 year deal due to the Skiles situation.

Interesting roll up of the Bulls offseason. They discuss who is deserving of the team MVP award, most disappointing player, etc. What's funny is that Loul Deng should be considered for both most disappointing and the MVP award. I think Gordon could be considered for both, but not as much as Deng on the disappointing side.

Besides Hinrich, Deng was easily the most frustrating player to watch on the Bulls this year. I was very disappointed with his performance this past season.

Deng would be my runner up for frustrating player behind Hinrich as well. I think I would have him in front of Gordon for MVP though...you can count on him for more minutes, and for better defense.

Report coming from a Phoenix radio station (Mark Asher?) is that Doug Collins is close to being named Bulls head coach.

Apparently, a few angry Bulls fans called in and he stuck with the story. He hasn't mentioned it since his show's open, though.

Asher supposedly has a reputation for being pretty reliable.

That would be insane, short-sighted, and stupid.

It's probably true.

Poop on a stick.

At least that means the next coach will bring the Bulls 6 championships, right?

They can use Collins until Rose is just about ready to take the team to the next level, then bring in Phil Jackson for 6 championships in 8 years.

Rose better not be thinking minor league baseball.

as long as he doesn't develop a gambling problem there won't be a reason for a sham retirement/minor league stint

Looks like Collins will be the coach (sorry I posted this in both threads).

From the Sun-Times:

Doug Collins to become Bulls head coach

May 29, 2008Recommend

BY BRIAN HANLEY Staff Reporter

Doug Collins will become the next Bulls head coach, according to a source.

The source said the deal is expected to be announced "sooner rather than later."

Expect one of the other candidates general manager John Paxson interviewed to be one of Collins' assistants.

Collins coached the Bulls from 1986-89 and took the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals. He also coached the Detroit Pistons and later coached Michael Jordan on the Washington Wizards.

Collins is an intense, fiery coach, who will remind some of Scott Skiles, who was fired on Christmas Eve.

Recently, Collins said he didn't want to leave his broadcasting job with TNT. Since then, the Bulls landed the No. 1 draft pick.

A native of Benton, Ill., Collins starred at Illinois State.
