I highly doubt the Bulls will come close to matching $6 million a year for a coach. In fact, take it to the bank. There's no chance the Bulls offer him more than $6 million.

So it's going to come down to D'Antoni taking the money from the Knicks or the better fit for his coaching career. I'd be highly surprised if he chose the latter. Bring on Avery.

I bet both parties will settle in the $5 mill range. D'Antoni definately does not want to go to NY, and it's made clear he is strictly using the Knicks as leverage. Not to mention, it seems to me the Knicks has Mark Jackson ticketed for the job, unless Avery blows them away.

Damn it. I'd have been perfectly happy with Avery as coach before these D'Antoni rumors surfaced. Now if we don't get him I'll be very disappointed.

Reinsdorf is scum.

your hate of all things Bulls management is as "broken record" as wrigley23's of all things leadoff hitter

Let's take a step back. Avery wouldn't be a disaster by any means.

I say don't give in. If D'Antoni really wants to take the $$$$ and go to NY, then let him. He's no dummy though, he knows full well it'll be awhile before he can turn that thing around. Maybe he really wants the challenge, I dunno 8-)

It *would* be a really nice payday, and he doesn't have to deal with Isaiah anymore, so maybe he goes. Then if we sign Avery --- I don't see that as a problem.

I only see an issue if we wind up getting some inexperienced cheapie coach who everyone knows will be overmatched. Seems like the candidates are out there right now, so I'm not really worried.

If this makes any sense, I think Avery is a better coach than D'Antoni, but I think D'Antoni would be a better coach for the Bulls. I'd really welcome the bigger change that comes with D'Antoni than Johnson.

the players got tired of Skiles, and from everything i can tell, Avery is more or less the same kind of coach as Skiles...

Avery's a little younger, he's had much more success as a coach than Skiles has ever had, and he's played with two of the best big men to ever play the game. The players would respect him, there's no doubt in my mind.

This is so bad. It shows how backward this organization is.

This move would have:

-Energized the fan base who had to sit through a dreadful season of watching the players basically give up on the team.

-Energize the players, who were said to be salivating at the opportunity to work with D'Antoni

-Given the Bulls a coach that could maximize the abilities (at least offensively) of the team, a team who has what is said to be "the perfect fit" for his system

-Given notice to the league that the Bulls want to win now. Not in 5-10 years. Now

-Given Paxson the leeway to not have to necessarily go for a roster overhaul.

Instead, the players are pissed, the fans are pissed, and the roster needs a lot of work, if this team even thinks about contending the next couple of seasons.

Great work JR.

Yeah this is a bummer. Same old story of the Bulls failing to land the big time name. I do think D'Antoni is making a huge, huge mistake coaching the Knicks. It's a bad match and they are just so freaking bad. We will see if its worth the money to go to that crappy organization.

I'm in complete agreement. It's disappointing, but I feel D'Antoni is making a huge mistake taking the money and going to New York. Really, Jamal Crawford is their only player that fits that system, and they are in bad shape. The only way he succeeds there is if New York is patient with him until he gets the players in (which won't happen because it's New York). I'm upset at the Bulls because this seemed like something that should have happened, but again, not all is lost right now. Let's see who the hire is first.

Not getting D'Antoni is NOT a bad move, people. I liked him, but not at $6 million a yr. The Knicks are a better fit in the sense, DA doesn't preach defense, and the players can't play defense.

The org has to be united for the hiring of a coach, and seeing as the org was split on DA, maybe it's a good thing the Bulls didn't rush into a coach the org was 100% behind.

The Bulls wouldn't have had to pay $6 million to have gotten him considering that the Bulls job is perceived as a much better one than the Knicks one.

It doesn't change the fact that Paxson and the Bulls were not in love with D'Antoni as coach, as evident of them dragging their feet to offer him a contract. Paxson wants a coach who will preach defense (why fire Skiles, then, I know) and seeing as DA abhors to the words defense= no a good fit for the Bulls.

But the feeling I get is that Paxson wants a coach he can manipulate into doing he (Paxson) wants, and not some coach with a backbone. So my guess Paxson is going to hire the "Flavor of the month" hot assistant to become HC. So I am guessing Thibadeaux from Boston will be Paxs guy.

Who cares? There's no salary cap for a coach, and the Bulls have more cash than any other NBA team. This is just Reinsdorf being cheap.

Well now I'm starting to hear disturbing talk that the Bulls might simply pluck some assistant from somewhere and make him the coach.

Terrible, if that indeed happens. Unless it's some kind of phenom, which seems unlikely.

Yeah, why give some new guy a shot when you can rehash a coach that has failed somewhere else. I mean, if someone has had a head coaching job and been fired he automatically must be better than a guy that has put in the time as an assistant and hasn't gotten an opportunity yet to prove himself.

I never said he would automatically be better. But hey, why miss an opportunity to prove how witty and sarcastic you can be?
