Derrek Lee for Chone Figgins would be a horrible trade for the Cubs.

If they ever traded Lee for a .600 ops infielder, thats it, Im done.

If it allowed them to get Teixiera, I'd be down.

My point being that I don't care that they're getting a .600 OPS infielder. I'd rather take a bag of balls, an old California Angels hat, or some 35 year old AAA player.

That makes no sense though. It's not like Figgins is the only option available. Even if you want to dump Lee to simply free up salary to get Teixeira, you should still get something better than Figgins in return. Figgins put up an OPS .005 points higher than Ronny Cedeno and earned $4.75 million for his efforts. On top of that, where are you going to play him? CF? He's sure as hell not going to play third over Ramirez or second over DeRosa or Fontenot for that matter. You're better off dealing Lee for some prospects, letting Pie play center, and signing Teixeira. You'd save more money that way for improvements in other areas.

Ok, let's say that there is some truth to all of this. Then, let's say that the Cubs honour Lee's respects and would send him to a California team. We know that Hendry has a working relationship with Towers and they have done a fair amount of dealings together. The Cubs could then potentially package Lee with Theriot and pick up Greene and Headley. I am not one to get into the fantasy trading world, but this would be a trade that could help both teams. The Padres would get a marquee bat in the middle of the lineup along with a young short stop. The Cubs would get a guy that they have had interest in before along with a potential RF replacement who hits switch. I know that the Padres and everyone else is very high on Headley, but maybe his value has dropped a bit with his past season and it'd be nice to see the Cubs buy low on someone like this and make him into something. If he doesn't work out, let him spend more time in the minors and give Hoff a shot to play more. Anyway, this would be a step towards become more left handed, would open the door to building for the future, and would allow the Cubs to go after Dunn or Tex to play first. I know that this is all unlikely, but I think that this would be a potentially good move for both teams. I know that they have Gonzalez, but maybe they could work a third team in. I dunno, just trying to think of possibilities.

Not only do they have Adrian Gonzalez, as you mention, but they also have one hell of a 1B prospect named Kyle Blanks (.325/.404/.514 at AA as a 21 year old). Therefore, I don't see it happening. A third team would absolutely need to be worked in, and at that point there's really no point for SD to be involved.

Best chance is Lee to SF, OAK or possibly the Angels if they aren't content with Kendry Morales at 1B.

I would definitely pursue Lee and others for Matt Cain if at all possible.

Not to mention that SD is slashing payroll, not increasing it.

Why?

because Chone Figgins is not particularly good at playing baseball

Year Ag Tm Lg G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ TB SH SF IBB HBP GDP

2008 30 LAA AL 116 453 72 125 14 1 1 22 34 13 62 80 .276 .367 .318 84 144 2 0 3 3 7

I'd take those numbers as a 2 hitter in our line-up...you guys have to remember were probably not going to get anything to spectacular for D-Lee and his huge contract

Its like you're Dusty Baker and Ned Colletti all wrapped up into one.

Wait a minute. You want Chone Figgins, who had less XBH's this year than our starting pitchers, batting right after Ryan Theriot at the top of the line up?

And you want to trade Derrek Lee for him?

Long season, he we come.

I suppose we could also go get us a new Jeromy Burtnitz and Todd Hollandsworth and repeat the joy that was 2005-2006

If we were to go after a speedster, Id much rather have Fred Lewis.

Dear Baltimore:

Please take a Lee, his bad contract, and a steaming pile of crap and give us your three best players. Deal?

Remember the talk how Baltimore was close to collusion with how badly they wanted Teixeira over the summer? Lee would be a backup plan for them in the absence of Tex. So unless it's feasible for us to sign Teixeira with Lee still on the club(doubt it), you can't really send Lee to Baltimore and sign Tex. Doesn't mean much if you want Dunn anyway, but it's an important consideration.

As far as the west coast goes, the Padres don't need Lee, the A's won't want his contract, the Giants have nothing of value outside of Cain, and the Dodgers have Loney. So that leaves Lee+ for Cain, hoping Ned Colletti is completely insane(better odds than getting Cain), or the Angels, who only have what we have quite a bit of(non-ace SP).

Your point stands, but did Nick Markakis get run over a car in your scenario?

Singles hitters up front in the lineup wouldn't hurt as much when your 3 hitter wouldn't be a near guaranteed GIDP.

How many more years does Lee have on his current deal? 1 year? Who is going to give up decent value for a guy with 1 year left on his contract?

He's signed through 2010.

I can't see it happening because he is viewed as the team leader.

I'd love to see him traded and see the Cubs go out and sign Tex.

Your second sentence is exactly what I want and your first post is exactly why it won't happen.

Seriously, if the Cubs can move Lee and have a legit shot at Tex, they'd be stupid not to pursue it.

The thing is though we'd have to sign Tex first and then trade Lee so we'd obviously get less for him I'd think

Maybe. Personally, I'm not as concerned about the return we get for Lee as much as I am just unloading him (if we get Tex, that is).

That's my thought as well. I'd assume that if you (not specifically you but anyone with this thought) are set on getting rid of Lee and replacing him with Tex, your main care would be to get somebody to take Lee's entire salary and get crap for prospects rather than getting decent prospects but having to sent the team $10M (just throwing out a number) as well to complete the deal.

Say the Cubs sign Tex, move Lee and acquire Roberts, if they go with Pie in CF and Fukedome in RF along with Ramirez, Soto, Theriot and Soriano, that'll give them 4 LHB and 4 RHB. Is that enough balance for you Steve Stone? With such a collection of players, I've got a lineup of:

Roberts

Theriot

Tex

Ramirez

Soriano

Soto

Pie

Fukedome

P

Of course, now, problem will be its not L-R down the lineup but, I don't know how to justify moving Pie or Fukedome up the lineup.
