Is it unlucky when you are only hitting to 1/3 of the field and the defense plays to that 1/3 of the field? Or is it more of a typical outcome? He's just not a single's hitter. What's his AVG every year when you subtract balls that go over the wall? I don't think it's very good. But, that he can hit balls over the wall is why he's probably worth his contract. If you subtract his at-bats that resulted in homers, Pena hit .147 last season. For his career, it would be .189. I think I did the math correctly. If you do the same thing for Babe Ruth, his career BA goes from .342 to .281. I think that you can find similar drops for all power hitters.

I think that they were concerned about a temperamental fan base. A team like the Blue Jays need someone to market the team around and this is probably the guy. What I don't understand is that they have minimal salary commitments this year, one in which they won't be competing. In two to three years when that team could potentially make a push with young pitching, why would you backload this contract (8,14,14,14,14)? They will still need a couple of pieces plus you know that players like Cecil and Romero among others will be due raises that could limit future spending.
