Signing Teixeira , who I'm assuming is a type A FA, means a 1st round draft choice for the Angels correct? If so, trading Lee to the Angels effectively gives him and a 1st round draft choice for Teixeira, not to mention saving them a chunk of change beyond 2010 . If the Angels cannot or chose not to sign Teixeira is such a package worth it?

If Lee is going to be traded to a California team. Apparently he has said he will waive his NTC for there. The only team that makes sense is the Giants, a Angels trade would only happen if they don't get Tex and that likely won't happen until later in the offseason and that could leave us with fewer options for 1B if it takes that long. The Giants need middle of the order bats. Looking at what the Giants have and would likely make available the guys that stand out to me are Fred Lewis, Jack Taschner, Tyler Walker(his numbers aren't great at face value but when you look into his splits he was good against righties 24 H 37 INN, and had a ERA over 3 points lower on the road), and Brain Wilson. I don't know if there is enough there to get a decent package back for Lee does anyone know anything about the Giants system, could we potentially get a decent 1B/OF/SP prospect out of them? A Fred Lewis, Jack Taschner, Tyler Walker return wouldn't be enough, but if they had a pretty good prospect to add in it would be worth considering, if we could sign Tex or maybe trade for Huff.

Sorry to say Tex is a Yankee.

Does he really want to play for NY? Maybe he thinks it'll take more than just him to make the Yankees a contender, in which case he might go to any of several other teams throwing lots of money at him (LAA, Balt, Cubs - hopefully).

To answer your question, the Giants actually have a fairly decent minor league org. Its just that all of their talent lies in the lower levels so you may not know about them.

Certainly a top 10 farm system in MLB.

Theo Epstein has ALWAYS had man love for D Lee - I'd certainly give him a call and see if he'd be willing to overpay with one of his young arms. Epstein has done a great job with drafts, but his trades haven't always been the best - he tends to fall in love with players and overpay for them (see Renteria, Lugo...).

Without a doubt I'd offer up D Lee and see if someone gives you an offer you can't refuse.

Neither Lugo, nor Renteria were trades.

Also, I'm not sure if you've heard of a guy named Kevin Youkilis.

You're right and I misspoke about Lugo and Renteria being trades - I had meant to include free agents in there as well (with Clement, Gagne and a couple other folks tossed in). My main point is that Theo tends to go overboard when he's "in love" with a certain player - I see no reason to not give him a call this offseason and let him know that Lee is available and see where it goes.

You mentioned Youkilis - he's one of the guys I was hoping we'd try to steal away from the Sox 2-3 years ago. I didn't forget about him at all - in fact, my thought was whether or not Theo would covet Lee enough to part with Youkilis in a trade if we threw in an arm or another piece? As much of a breakout year as it was for Youkilis this year, there have been some rumblings that Manny was not the only player in the clubhouse to get tired of Youk's penchant for throwing a hissy fit when he makes an out. Personally, I think Youkilis is one of those guys who can get angry about a lousy at bat and use that frustration to bear down even harder in his next AB.

Just for grins, which corner IF's would you rather have playing for the Cubs next year??

Aram 3B

DLee 1B

or

Youk 3B

Tex 1B

I'm not saying there's much chance for something like that to happen (although I think it could be done), but I'd be curious what combo you all would rather see out there?

From MLBtraderumors.com:

A similar argument can be made against the idea of getting Derrek Lee to the Bay. Also signed for two more seasons (at $13MM per), Lee's a bit older than Konerko and his power numbers have dropped quite a bit. And as Rogers mentions, the Cubs will not let Lee go without getting compensated with a Cain or Sanchez in return. Lee may have two more above-average years left in him. Cain and Sanchez is worth far more than that to a rebuilding team like the Giants.

Would you make this deal:

Lee, DeRosa, and Pie for Cain and Lewis.

Posted
Lee, Cedeno, Pie, Hill/Marshall for Cain and Lewis sounds real interesting. It's hard to balance the Giants' need for youth and Sabean's obsession for age though.

Second part is so true. If we can't get Cain I wouldn't mind a Lee for Sanchez and Lewis deal.

If the Cubs can somehow upgrade Lee to Teixera and get a nice pitcher from the Giants on top of it, this former Hendry hater will proclaim the man a genius. Would almost start getting my hopes up again.
