I just remembered reading a story a few months back that said that Woody Williams, Roy Oswalt and Jake Peavy were all pretty good friends and that they bought some property together in Southern Illinois for hunting. This might explain why St. Louis and Chicago were listed as potential destinations. Houston made sense, since Roy still pitches for Houston. LA and Atlanta make sense since they are close to his current home and where he grew up.

This doesn't actually help anyone understand where Peavy may eventually end up between Atlanta and Chicago, but I thought I'd throw this information out there as reasoning behind the 5 teams Peavy originally chose to waive his NTC to be traded to.

This thread reminded me of the Roberts stuff from last year so I went and checked out OH again just for fun. I saw a Roberts thread and one of the first posts I read was one from bigbird saying "Better than a 50% chance Roberts gets traded this offseason" followed by dozens of posts of people asking him for more info and details. Pretty funny.

That made my morning.

I can't vouch for Williams, but Oswalt and Peavy are hunting buddies with the guy who owns KAMs. They've come by to hang out in the past after a trip.

I can't confirm that Williams was the 3rd person, but I'm pretty sure that was who the 3rd guy was. Williams did pitch for both Houston and San Diego, however.

Oh the Yankees are willing to trade the scraps they don't want anymore for Peavy?

Thank you.

That's hilarious. I had to go over there just to see it for myself.

Bruce Miles joined Jim Memolo on WGN Radio Tuesday night and discussed the Peavy rumors. Miles said that Peavy has not officially signed his no-trade waiver and mentioned players such as Josh Vitters, Welington Castillo and Sean Marshall are possibly are on the table for Peavy. He added the Padres are into sluggers and pitchers and Felix Pie and Ronny Cedeno does not meet either of those descriptions.

Miles added the "ball is in the Padres court" and he thinks the Cubs offer is a good deal. Miles said the Cubs have money to play with the off-season but do have a budget and once the Peavy deal is done they still need to add a left-handed bat and a veteran in the bullpen. Miles thinks it will be hard for the Cubs to trade for Jake Peavy and resign Ryan Dempster. Miles finished with an interesting tidbit, "the Cubs would love to trade Jason Marquis."

Hmm...that would be an interesting situation if Pie wasn't even in the deal. I wonder what else he could bring on the trade market.

If we acquire Peavy what do you think the Orioles are going to think when we basically were offering the same players to trade for Roberts that we are using/used to acquire Harden and Peavy in a 5 month span. If we acquire Peavy Angelos shenanigans for not allowing us to acquire Roberts may be the best non-trade ever for the Cubs.

Hmmm... that comment about sluggers directly contradicts an earlier blurb (can't remember where I saw it) that the Pads were focusing on constructing their lineup with speed and defense as the priorities, given the way their ballpark plays.

The Marquis tidbit is more obvious than interesting.

Latest From Rosenthal:

The Padres again have asked the Braves to revise their proposal for right-hander Jake Peavy, requesting that the team substitute Single-A catcher Tyler Flowers for Single-A center fielder Gorkys Hernandez, according to major-league sources.

Flowers, 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, is tearing up the Arizona Fall League, and the Braves probably are unwilling to part with him in the same package as shortstop Yunel Escobar and either right-hander Charlie Morton or left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes. Frankly, they're not thrilled with trading any of those players.

The Cubs and Padres, meanwhile, continue to discuss the same list of six to eight names from which the Padres would choose in a deal for Peavy. The Padres then would have the option of spinning one or more of those players to other clubs.

One rival GM poses a good question: Why are the Braves so willing to trade Escobar? When the Braves included shortstop Elvis Andrus in their package for Teixeria 16 months ago, club officials reasoned that Escobar could man the position for the next six years.

Well, Escobar is part of the price to get Peavy. The Braves believe that Brent Lillibridge would be a lesser hitter than Escobar but a superior defender, further benefiting their pitching staff.

So now the Braves don't want to trade Grokys or the Padres don't want him? When they added him people were saying that was a deal maker. This just gets more interesting every hour :banghead:

Yeah I remember reading that too. They said they wanted a MI, a speedy OF, and close to/if not already major league ready pitching. Building a team based on power is never going to win in that park. Speed, defense, and pitching is what will win playing there.

On the other hand, being interested in a slugger doesn't mean building a team based on power. You need some power, unless you can magically find a whole bunch of punchless speed guys who get on base all the time.

I know they have Cameron Maybin, but could Florida be interested in Pie (and others) for Hermida? Colorado for Hawpe?

Okay, show of hands...who has refreshed this thread more than 10 times today? 100 times?

Some days (not today) I have this thread on auto-refresh every 30 seconds, and I come back every now and then to read the latest. You do the math. :)

Considering Peavy has no trade rights and only two teams are interested to trade for him that he would waive his right for, Josh Vitters, Wellington Castillo and Sean Marshall is a good package for the Padres IMO. Vitters is good.

It would seem kind of silly to build a team around power when you play half your games in Petco.

From a Ken Rosenthal article earlier this month:

Padres GM Kevin Towers says the team eventually plans to move in the fences at Petco Park. "I'm even for it now," Towers said. "Right field is Death Valley." Towers recalled that the team signed Ryan Klesko long-term believing that left-handed power hitters would perform well at Petco. "It's been the polar opposite," Towers said.
