If Levine's reports of a $150 million dollar payroll are correct Hendry has room to work with , even more if we don't bring back Wood and trade Marquis.

If they don't pay Wood, my fear is we'll see Remlinger/Hawkins/Howry/Eyre 5.0 and waste much of that room on second tier relief arms. It makes logical sense to let Wood walk, but I'm pretty sure I would prefer they just bring him back at some reasonable rate.

I'm taking it with a big grain of salt, but if Riot goes to SD, does that make Cedeno our starting SS or do we heavily pursue Furcal? Or maybe we get Greene coming our way?

If Theriot was involved in the deal, you would have to imagine that Hendry has a plan in place to fill the hole at SS. DeRosa and Fontenot are both questionable candidates.

It's also possible that if the Peavy trade gets finalized before Friday, maybe the Cubs would take the Dempster offer off the table and offer it up to Furcal.

I would sure hope so.

I'd love Furcal. I'd take him at the expense of Dempster, but not at the expense of Kerry Wood. Only because my man love for Kerry Wood borders on unhealthy. I'd make a lousy GM. I'm too sentimental.

I've never been a big fan of creating one hole to fill another, as we'd be doing in this case if this rumor is true (not that we really have a "hole" in our rotation, but we'd be creating one at SS to improve), but I think I could make the exception in this case.

One of our strengths last year was that we didn't really have a true "need" anywhere. Sure, we could have upgraded in some places, but we were pretty set everywhere on the field. If Hendry doesn't lock up a SS before Opening Day, it may be a point of contention during the season.

And seeing as he likes it here, I'm sure Wood would give us a discount.

Who says the deal is done exactly?

And what does Veterans Day have to do with anything? Teams should be able to make trades.

Inside joke that goes back to the BRob thread last year.

oh ok so he was just kidding then?

Assume that everything you read in this thread is nonsense and you'll be golden.

The only part of that that doesn't make sense to me is that Desipio already has a pretty established readership and has even been mentioned among the top Cubs blogs and has gotten shoutouts from Len on TV.

I don't get why they'd try something like that at this stage in the game, so to speak.

Their size and popularity has never stopped ESPN from reporting nonsense as absolute fact. I don't think there is such a thing as "too big" a blog to post the occasional garbage story.

It is a blog. Blogs by definition do not contain fact, and if they claim to, links are expected to be provided substantiating the fact.

ESPN has expanded their blog section greatly in recent years, where a lot on conjecture occurs, but you don't often see a story about a trade reported as fact unless a deal is in place "in principle", if not official.

I do wish sites that contain both "news" and blogs would do a better job separating the space they share, because it is too easy to mistake a news report for a blog.

I was so thinking this trade was done and over with. Thanks for ruining my day!

Ok, Buzz Bissinger.

Based on everything you seem to know about him, he sure does appear to have a fan in you, UMFan.

For his next stunt, Dolan will be arranging a Voyeur Bus in Chicago. He'll have nude models and porn stars riding around town in a glass bus. He figures it'll be a good way to "get back in the mix," as you put it.

I don't get this Kurt Evans photoshop at all.

Dude, kayfabe!

For all of you that enjoy my 3-way trade proposals, look at one I posted a week ago:

You called?

Cubs sign Furcal and then trade Marshall, Veal/Hart, and Ceda to Marlins for Hermida and Olsen.

Cubs trade Olsen, Pie, Theriot, and Hill to SD for Peavy.

Furcal @ SS, Hermida in RF, and Peavy in the rotation.

Could be pretty close to being true with Pie, Theriot, and Marshall (wrong team) being traded with Peavy coming back and Furcal signing.

why would the padres want theriot, petco would rob him of all his power!

I can't see this happening. Hendry and Piniella friggin love Theriot because hes so damn gritty. No way they trade their boy.

If we're giving up Theriot we better be getting more than Peavy.

I do so love that this perspective continues to exist. Blogs are media. Media conveys news, and blogs are news sources just like anything owned by Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, or anybody else.

There are certainly differences between a blog and an accredited news source, but the assertion "blogs by definition do not contain fact" is just plain ridiculous.

Now if you excuse me, I have to return to MY blog in order to discuss the World Champion Chicago Cubs. They've won the title 4 years straight and have talked a surprisingly resurgent Mark Grace out of retirement in order to help him accumulate the numbers he needs in his bid for the Hall of Fame.

This must be the calm before the storm.

If/when we get Peavy, the board will crash. It'll make the massive user rush seen during the Nomar and Harden trades seem like peanuts.

I was on vacation for the Nomar trade watching espn when they announced, I don't think anything can top that being the last minute deal it was.

If Hendry lands Peavy and Dempster leaves some reports had us targeting another starter like Lowe to join the rotation . If the top tier guys Hendry targets become out of his price range. Anyone interested in Randy Johnson on a one year deal incentive based? He a great second half year and did a radio interview last year he raved about Piniella. Johnson wants to play for a contender and get 300 wins something the Cubs can offer him.
