I'd sit the regulars again today, because there's little shot they see Niese in the playoffs. Probably go w/ the same lineup as yesterday and again on Thursday. Tues and Wed vs. Santana and Perez, I'd like to see the regular lineup vs. lefties for at least 3 ABs each. Start pulling them after 6.

I don't really worry about the Cubs starters not seeing Pedro on Thursday. He probably wouldn't go til Game 4 anyway, if at all, and he's not very good anymore.

I really hope the Cubs can win this series, or at least split. Two reasons:

1) I want to face the Dodgers, not the Mets or Phillies in the NLDS.

2) I actually feel sorry for what their fans are going through. While I think really dislike some of their players (Hart, Braun, Fielder, Torres), as a Cubs fan, I know how they feel after seemingly being a lock for the playoffs for a good part of the season.

I think the rest of the way we'll probably see 5-6 regulars and 2-3 subs, with the positions changing each day.

Regardless, I think its stupid that the MLB is gently reminding people about the integrity of the game. Tell me which regular is going to take these games seriously at all (especially these first few games)? Sure they will want to do good and win, but how many of them are going to be reading scouting reports and preparing like they normally do for games?

Who knows, maybe I'm off. But I know that there's a little thing inside most people that causes them to focus just a little bit harder when it matters. I would think AAA callups, fighting to impress the Cubs staff would be better bets to succeed this week.

I absolutely love that we hold the Brewers franchise by the balls.

After this series, I think the Brewers will owe us BIG time.

They hold us by the balls as well. As I'm sure everyone knows, we need the Brewers to stay in this race until Sunday so the Mets and/or Phillies can throw Johan/Hamels and give us a much better chance of winning the series.

We have a hand in them making the playoffs or not; they (by way of staying in the race) might affect a pitcher we face in the playoffs. I like our standing much better, but yeah, it's all connected.

I have a feeling in a 5 game series the Dodgers would beat us, or at least have good odds too. Their pitching is extremely underrated.

In terms of a hitter dominating a 5-game series, pick your poison. The Temp is swinging a really hot bat for the Phillies and Delgado is doing well for the Mets (and both teams have other really good bats surrounding their first baseman). And of course Manny is playing really well for a while now, though the rest of the hitters in that lineup don't stack up with the Utleys and Reyeses of the world.

I trust our pitcher to shut down a team's offense more than I trust our offense to tee off on really good pitching. Am I alone in this theory?

I'm looking at some of the numbers, and apparently they benefit from huge home/road splits. Obviously with Dodger Stadium that's going to happen, but we're talking 3.00 ERA at home and 4.44 ERA on the road.

I still think the Dodgers have a lot of quality pitching. They don't have a dominant number 1, but they seem to have 3 number 2's in Billingsley, Kuroda, and Lowe. They also have the wild card in Kershaw, who has had a pretty good September and a wild card because we've never faced him. Their bullpen reminds me of a slightly lesser version of ours, which is just ok until you get to the 8th and 9th inning guys. Add that to the fact that they have a solid lineup 1-6 and easily the best hitter on the two teams and its a team that can beat us in a short series.

Edit: Oh and by the way, the Dodgers have the best team ERA against the Cubs this season, despite going 2-5 against us. Here are the best ERAs against the Cubs this year:

1. Dodgers 2.49 (7 games played)

2. Rays 2.67 (3 games played)

3. Phillies 3.34 (7 games played)

4. Cardinals 3.60 (15 games played)

5. Blue Jays 3.67 (3 games played)

I'm 100% with you, I'd rather face a weaker offense than weaker pitching, because the way good teams vs. good teams usually go, its not typically very high scoring affairs

I can honestly see our hitting clogged down to 3-4-5 runs a game, and I just would love to stifle the opposing bats, and not worry about having to get too many runs.

What I'm saying is bring on the Dodgers. The whole team is hackers without a lot of power with the very notable exception of Manny. But we do a good job with Pujols most of the time, and I think we can do a decent job with Manny, probably with a lot of intentional unintentional walks.

Actually you are 100% against me. I am in favor of facing the better offense vs. the better pitching :). Look what happened last year with Arizona

The Dodgers have won 16 of 21. They are this year's version of the Rockies to me. They seem to be the team getting hot at the right time. Lowe's ERA is 2.69 since the break. Kuroda's under 2.50 since August 1. Billingsley has been consistently with pretty even with splits home/road and by the month. Manny's been about a 1.3 OPS hitter in the NL. LA is a dangerous team to me.

I would expect a lineup maybe something like this:

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Soto

DeRosa

Edmonds

Fontenot

Theriot

I expect my lineup will be something like this:

Pre-game 2 beers

1st inning 1 beer

2nd inning 1 beer

3rd inning 1 beer 1 hot dog

4th inning 1 beer

5th inning 1 beer 1 food item TBD

6th inning 2 beers

7th inning 2 beers hopefully carrying me over to the 8th and 9th.

Niese is a lefty, so I'd guess something like

Soriano LF

Cedeno SS

Lee 1B

Soto C

DeRosa 2B

McGehee 3B

Johnson CF

Fukudome RF

True, but I'll only be getting into Shea about 10-15 minutes before gametime and there is nowhere out there to grab a beer outside. I could brown bag it on the subway, but the wife will complain about that.

Funny you should have Pujols and Manny within the same paragraph, was watching a little of the Yankees/Orioles last night. Subject of Manny came up and right on queue one the ESPN baseball crew calls him the greatest right handed hitter of the last quarter century. Makes sense, if you were or are a Yankee or Red Sox and put up big time numbers - you must be the greatest. Don't get me wrong Manny numbers are mind boggling but, Pujols' are better.
