SD Shawn Estes, LHP (0-0, 0.00) @ CHC Jason Marquis, RHP (1-2, 5.08)
     Padres (14-25) Cubs (23-15)

Scouting Report:

Padres: On the day that he had his contract purchased from Triple-A Portland, Estes allowed two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief in a 5-4 loss to the Braves on Thursday, striking out two and walking one. He is the Padres' No. 5 starter for now and will make his first start since April 5, 2006, when he faces the Cubs. Estes threw some nice two-seam fastballs against the Braves and had good break on his curveball, impressing manager Bud Black.

Cubs: Marquis is coming off a disappointing loss against the Cardinals in which he walked five and gave up seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander does have a slightly better ERA on the road, but he's kept the walks down at home, issuing three in three starts over 16 1/3 innings. On the road, he's walked 12 in 17 1/3 innings. Marquis hasn't been consistent, and usually gets off to a good start. He needs to get on track.

I love seeing a line of 1.000/.500/4.000. It's such a crazy line caused by the tiny sample size. I'm not sure if you're going to see the OBP and slugging more apart than that. It's technically possible, but it would definitely be rare.

Unless I am much mistaken, that line comes from his mashing Estes in one game with the Jays against us in 2003. I hated him at the time.

If that's the game at Cincy, I was there. I had to drive back and write a paper for one class on my laptop on the way back. Oh, and I also had a speech to give in a different class the next morning.

I wound up just dropping the class that I had to write the paper for.

anyone else nervous since the blowout came today?

Vs. a soft-tossing lefty the night after a blowout usually means we'll score about 2 runs.

I'm confused as to how his OBP is .500 even though he has 3 PA's. One was the home run, what were the other 2? I know sac bunts go against your OBP, but the 3rd at-bat must have been something that didn't hurt or help his OBP. I'm sure it's something very simple that I'm missing.

Sac bunts do not count against your OBP, but sacrifice flies do. So Johnson has had 1 sac bunt, 1 sac fly, and a home run against Estes.

Against those free swinging Cubs of Dusty yes but, this Cub team appears to have an idea that showing some plate discipline pays off. Being so, I believe they'll wait out Estes, draw some BB's and score some runs.

You do a great job setting the stage for the games. Well done, #1 starter.

I credit this to my Alaska keychain.

When my wife and I honeymooned in Alaska two summers ago, I bought a keychain that has the Alaska license plate on it. After making that my main set of keys instead of the Wrigley Field keychain I was using, the Cubs went on their hot streak. They were hot with the Wrigley keys for a while, but I waited too long to switch them out. I did it after Votto's 3 HR game in Cincy, and they've been hot ever since.

All hail the Alaska keys!

Before you all bash Estes, keep in mind this start:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CIN/CIN200309240.shtml

That pretty much shored up our rotation for the postseason.

I will never forget that game, and I will never fully hate Estes because of that game. IIRC, he even had 2 hits that game.

Of course if he didn't suck the rest of the year, that game wouldn't have been necessary.

Bingo.

No need to sugar coat because of one well-timed quality start. He sucked.

Everytime I expect shootout. It's a 3-2 game. This time, that won't happen. Cubs 1-4 should kill Estes. The lefties at the top of the Padres order should hit Marquis well. The key will be whoever turns the lineup over best at the bottom.
