Before you all bash Estes, keep in mind this start:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CIN/CIN200309240.shtml

That pretty much shored up our rotation for the postseason.

I will never forget that game, and I will never fully hate Estes because of that game. IIRC, he even had 2 hits that game.

Of course if he didn't suck the rest of the year, that game wouldn't have been necessary.

Bingo.

No need to sugar coat because of one well-timed quality start. He sucked.

That and, look at the Reds lineup that day. Who wouldn't have shut them down?

Freel

Hummel

Jimenez

Casey

Branyan

Pena

LaRue

Olmedo

Add that to the fact that we were up 7-0 after the 3rd inning, and I guess his performance isn't as impressive as once thought.

BTW, the fact that Estes started that game over Cruz reminds me of Trachsel getting the start over Marshall late last season against Houston. When will the Cubs learn?

Last year we couldn't hit soft-tossing lefties worth a damn.

This year, we stink in the game immediately following a blowout.

Did have the 6 game win streak with the middle 4 games all won by 6 or more runs.

True.

I guess I'm leery, though. I have a feeling at some point today we'll be saying "We could have used some of those runs today!"

Dude, if you have the choice between someone whose proven they suck and someone who might suck...you gotta go with the proven vet. No need to take those chances.

So with a long line starting to form behind him, is it safe to say that tonight could be Marquis' last chance?

I wouldn't shed any tears.

Although what do you do with him? I guess he'd first be demoted to the bullpen. If he stinks there, I don't know if the Cubs would be willing to send him to the minors with that contract. I don't know if they'd eat it by DFA'ing him, so I guess the most logical choice would be to trade him for whatever you can get. It would be either garbage for garbage, or we'd have to ship off some good young talent along with him if we wanted his salary completely off the books.

I guess it would probably be garbage for garbage, and hope we strike gold again like we did in the Hundley for Karros and Grudz trade.

Is it even possible to send him to the minors? Does he have any options?

what a lousy pitching matchup. get ready in the bleachers folks.

I'm modestly surprised that Marquis is still pitching in the major leagues

Can we please replace him as soon as possible? BigSlick, GM would eat the remaining 14 million of his salary and DFA him.

Cubs record when vance is present at the game 3-0.

Vance has his last game at Wrigley tonight. Let's go Cubs!

Good luck. Marquis needs all the help he can get.

Estes didn't start over Cruz in that game. We needed a 6th starter due to a doubleheader(in Pittsburgh maybe?)

I hope Marquis gets rocked for 7 runs but we come back and win..He is my most disliked Cub..I want a 4 and 5 rotation of Hill and Gallagher

Softball here in paradise tonight... hopefully I can be talking trash to the Cards fans while the Cubs are winning another and the Cards are being what the Cards should be.

Jason Marquis is Geovany Soto when compared to Jim Edmonds.

I'd be surprised if Marquis is demoted for another pitcher if he does bad tonight. So far the swapping hasn't worked very well. Lieber and Gallagher both sucked in their starts. My guess is if we don't think he is a starter anymore we will immediately try to trade him but keep him in the rotation until we do. You demote him he has zero value you keep him in rotation he has at least some value.

Either way he would be coming off of a crappy outing in a season of crappy outings from a recent history of crappy outings. If Marquis doesn't pitch well, he doesn't have any value other than an innings eater.

And if he does pitch poorly again, he better be removed from the rotation for Rich Hill.

I'm 2-0 in the stands. Will be there next Friday.

I probably won't get to Wrigley this year. :(

I'll be at the game in Milwaukee on July 31st, though.
