Oh how the roided have fallen

Or it could just be the fact that he's, you know, in his late 30's.

And had several concussions. I've been told they do wonders for the hand/eye coordination. I use to make fun of him, but secretly I've always admired his skills on the baseball field. He's probably the best defensive CF in the last 25 years.

Are you kidding me??????!!!! He is without question the most overrated defensive CF probably to ever play the game. He made his entire career out of making routine flay balls look like amazing catches. Yeah, he was good at making the diving catch, but if you judge the ball correctly off the bat and take the correct line on it (like Andrew Jones) you have to dive a lot less often.

Don't let your biases cloud your judgment.

He's not. He's completely accurate in saying Edmonds made a whole lot of more difficult than average catches look like you had to be a superhero to make them. However, he was in fact a very good CF, but not even close to the best of the last 25 years.

Griffey

Jones

Hunter

Puckett

Lofton

Just to name a few that were as good or better than him on an every day basis.

He was short and chubby, but he could go get it. Maybe not the best example, but he was well above avg. in CF.

Not that it's a good measure at all, especially since he was a good hitter, but he did win 6 gold gloves.

Yes, I realize Edmonds won a bunch. Just offering some support to the notion that Puckett being on that list might not be so absurd...

Andruw Jones?

Griffey?

Not even close, IMO.

You mean Edmonds isn't close to Jones and Griffey, right? Jones is easily one of the best CF ever. Edmonds was a great fielder, but not better than Andruw.

I don't like Edmonds personally, but I respect his game.

With that said, I won't call him the most overrated defensive CF in the last 25 yrs, but I wouldn't call him the best defensive CF, either. As someone else mentioned, I would take Torii Hunter, Andruw Jones, Gary Matthews, Jr, KGriffey JR, Mike Cameron, Ichiro, over Edmonds in the past 25 yrs, defensively in CF.

I would put Edmonds in the very good defensively CF spot, but not the "special" catergory, only because Edmonds was more hype the substance.

i can't think of anything more idiotic than signing a 38-year-old who's been on a steady decline since 2004 to take time away from our promising top prospect. i feel the need to use the word idiotic in this post again just to hammer the point home. idiotic. yep, i think that should do it.

Edmonds was very good, but he was never as good as Andruw Jones. You don't need to be biased to see that.

the best part of the story is that he's being replaced by Jody Gerut

im calling taveras will soon be traded to the pads which sucks for him because playing against padres catchers and pitchers is like going to disneyland for him

Why would the now unemployed Jim Edmonds be any better than the still unemployed Kenny Lofton. Not that I want either of them (I don't, I'd rather trade for someone that actually doesn't suck and is less than 35 years old), but really, if we were going to sign an over the hill star hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, wouldn't we have already done so?

Seriously, if we're going to play a guy in CF who can't get their OPS above .750, we may as well play Pie because he plays better defense than any of the others or give Cedeno a try because he's the most likely to actually do anything offensively.

So why does nobody want to accept the fact that the best thing for Pie could be a few weeks in Iowa? I keep hearing the arguement that hes accomplished everything he can at that level, but its not about accomplishment here, its about working against some minor league pitchers and working on mechanics.

Remember Ricky Weeks last season? Sent down to AAA for a short while, came back and caught fire? Granted, he could use the experience again, but for the time, it worked wonders.

That's not a fact.

Its as much as a fact as the Felix Pie would be great given the chance to play full time arguement. More of a speculation.

Could you kindly point me in the direction of a post that said that Pie would be great if given full time playing duties?

Meanwhile, why don't you invest just a few minutes looking at Pie's history of performance in professional baseball and then get back to us about the "speculation" part.

Sometimes one can learn things on the internet if one tries.

It's much less of a fact than the fact that Pie has been better than Reed Johnson offensively for the last four weeks, and is light-years ahead defensively.

Felix has shown potential, e.g. the Mets HR. I don't think sending him down is going to do him any better than staying in the majors.

It's not that Pie would be great if given the chance to play full time. It's the fact that he hasn't been able to show what he can do this year because he hasn't been given the chance to play full time. Yes, it's possible that he may fail. But how are we to know that if he doesn't get the chance to play more than once every couple of days?

Jones isn't even in the Top 15 of all-time CF. He couldn't carry the jock of players like Mays, Mantle, Cobb and Snider.
