After speaking to his agent, general manager Kevin Towers said that he expects to learn as soon as Monday whether Kosuke Fukudome will accept the Padres' contract offer.

The Padres are believed to have offered a three-year deal worth at least $10 million per season, but the Cubs are also expected to make a serious run at Fukudome. Playing at Petco Park would crush whatever power potential Fukudome has and he could be asked to play center field if the Padres don't re-sign Mike Cameron.

San Diego must be pretty confident that he wants to play for them next year. Otherwise, Towers has a very strange negotiation strategy by making the lowest offer and then pressure the guy to make a decision as soon as possible.

Yeah, not very smart on his part.

I have a bad feeling too, but that's mostly based on our track record. Then again, we're typically not used to being the favorites to sign good players...

Pardon my confusion.

Is the 'as early as today' announcement on whether he'll come to play MLB ball or actually choosing/accepting an offer from the team he'll play for in 2008?

Much appreciated.

On what team he's playing for. He's already decided he's coming to the US.

And I have a bad feeling as well. Though Hendry said he won't be outbid for him, and he said the same thing about Soriano.

As I understand it, I think he's expected to make a decision as to which team to sign with in relatively short order.

Thank you.

I'm not worried. Jimbo believes this season hinges on this signing - plus allows for more flexibility on his other favorite moves (just my feeling on what goes inside the head of Jimbo).

If it comes down to $$, he'll reel him in.

Unless Fuk's nickname should be "Puff The Magic Dragon" I just can't think of many reasons to go to San Diego over Chicago. Sure, the weather is nicer. But with the extra 6 to 10 million he can probably milk out of the Cubs he can buy himself a damn nice Cali offseason home.

Must have been discussed ad nauseum but I missed it. Does anybody have Fuku's projections based on his Japan league numbers?

.380 .610 .812

I'll take it. 1422 OPS with an OBP over .600, that's pretty solid.

What the heck are those numbers?

My pessimistic view of what Fukudome will do in the US.

The Japanese culture is all about respect.

Whoever shows Fukudome the most respect (i.e, money) will get him. He's not going to choose San Diego because they have better weather than Chicago.

he's a baseball player, not a samurai.

Pessimistic? I'm going to assume that those numbers are OBP, SLG and OPS. If the first two are his OBP and SLG, then his OPS would be .990, and if that's your pessimistic numbers, I'd love to see what your optimistic numbers are.

If this falls through ... Furcal and Fuk will haunt JH's days and nights.... :?

That's why I'm actually confiden about this...losing Furcal seemed to really burn Hendry, hence the Soriano deal, hence why he won't be outbid here. If Fukudome goes elsewhere, it will be for reasons other than money.
