The Japanese culture is all about respect.

Whoever shows Fukudome the most respect (i.e, money) will get him. He's not going to choose San Diego because they have better weather than Chicago.

he's a baseball player, not a samurai.

Ever been to Japan?

I wonder who would win in a ninja fight...Fukudome or Dempster?

Neither, they'd mutually respect each other and chop off Mark Prior's other arm.

Lame, I want to see them fight..actually I mean I want to see Dempster get his arse whooped. You just can't up and become a ninja? Who the heck does he think he is..its like the mafia, you have to be born into it.

Good stuff...really. A friend of mine that was born in Taiwan loves it when people ask him if he knows karate. Keep the stereo type one liners coming guys, they're really funny.

Yes. You're focusing on one stereotype when there's a bevvy of others that could just as easily not be applicable.

Everyone knows China = Jackie chan and kung fu movies. Japan = Ken Watanabe and the Last Samurai.

There are no ninjas in Japan. Only dead ones. :-&

"respect" permiates their culture, in business, social interactions, samurais, etc etc, as well as "excellance"

thats not to say Fukudome adheres to that....

No, I'm focusing on the facts that are applicable. His agent has stated Fukudome is going to take the best financial offer and that geography will only come into play as a tie-breaker. If Hendry shows the man the proper respect (read Money), he'll be a Cub. If he doesn't, he won't. It's as simple as that.

Towers rated the Cubs serious bidders for Fukudome, and Urbon said the dollar figures need to be close no matter the bidder.

“The only way that geography is a factor is if on the contract side, everything is fairly even,” Urbon said.

Does anyone else see the plus of having basically a "human calculator" in right field.

[Rozner]

Absolutely. He can calculate how many runs Aramis costs the team with his poor defense and lazy running.

thats not a stereotype. "the voice" is talking about a quality adhered to by a culture.

I don't have much faith in his agent. The guy doesn't seem to know what is going on. Even Rosenthal scooped him on Fukudome's annoucement of his intent to come to the US.

Pretty much anything an agent says is just a ploy to up the ante. My guess is that they want San Diego to get closer to Chicago's offering price and if it did come down to geography, San Diego wins.

There's a funny thing about stereotypes. A lot of them are true most/much of the time. Edited by David

I'll probably lose my lunch if I find out he goes to the Padres. Why on earth would he make that choice?

It's not a bad place to live...

It's not about living there, I'm sure he's talking about a hitter choosing a pitcher's park over a small field. These guy play half a year in a city and can make a permanent residence anywhere. How many of the Cubs players live in Chicago during the offseason? Not many. Most live in warm weather states, or outside of the country, to avoid Midwest winters.

Very true, I don't see why weather would be an issue. I'm sure he'll spend his winters in Japan.

Agreed. My guess is that Towers is pretty confident that is the case also.

Yeah, that what it sounds like to me too. I hope Jenkins will have a career year with the Cubs in 08.

I highly doubt Pads will go beyond 3/30.

I don't. They have the resources to give it to him. The Padres know they have to improve this offseason to keep pace with Colorado, Arizona and the Dodgers. They just made a huge commitment to Peavy, and it doesn't make a ton of sense to make such a huge commitment and not upgrade the team elsewhere.
