Jerome has health problems and is basically a shut in, with nothing else to do but scream about the Yankees and Knicks.

Does he like to play Trivial Pursuit? Does his father deliver Yoo-Hoo?

Jerome (who does sound like Pesci) is not indicative of all Yankees fans. Jerome is insane and the radio staions let him on for comic releif. Please do not act like Jerome from the bronx speaks for everyone. Jerome has health problems and is basically a shut in, with nothing else to do but scream about the Yankees and Knicks. So, please use a better sample group than that when bashing Yankees fans.

wow..I find that really creepy that you know him...or maybe it's just ironic...don't ya think.

There is a caller, Jerome I believe, who calls into both 1050 ESPN and 660 WFAN in NY. Over the course of perhaps 20 minutes of radio listening the past two weekends, I've heard him rant about how he refuses to give up Cano in a deal for Santana. He also refuses to give up Chamberlain and Hughes. He might include Melky, but doesn't want to.

Anyway, imagine annoying Bronx accent (think Joe Pesci in Home Alone, but as a 40 year old virgin who lives in his mom's attic):

I'M NOT GIVING UP CANOOOOO!!!

(host)You've got to give up something for San

I'M NOT GIVING UP CANOOOOOOOOOO!!!! (spaces added as he emphasizes his point)

(host)But why would the Twins trade

I'M NOT GIVING UP CANO!!!!!

(host)Then get ready to lose Joba and Hughes

I'M NOT GIVING UP JOBA OR HUGHES, AND I'M NOT GIVING UP CANOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Kind of hilarious actually. But this is a fairly sizable opinion. NY never wants to give up a top 5 prospect. They expect to get whomever they want, without giving up much. And in a lot of ways, that's how Cashman has operated. He rarely gives up the better prospects. A few years ago it was Soriano, with Dangelo Jimenez being substituted in as the guy they would give up.

Yes most fans do not want to give up Cano. I am in the minority. I think if it takes Cano to keep our young pitching so be it. Santana is one of the best pitchers available, but I think the price might be too high. Cano, Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson (or Tabata) is quite pricey for the rights to negotiate a 7/140 with him.

I didn't tell the story to bash Yankees fans. I just found it quite funny.

But it is true that the majority of Yankees fans hold a "we don't have to give up our best to get their best" attitude.

I would bet he doesn't really know him personally. People around hear "know" a few regular callers because they call all the time and related some personal information and are basically characters from a show. There was an old lady a few years ago who had some sort of respiratory issue and would cough throughout her calls into WFAN. The Mike half of Mike and the Mad Dog hosts an NFL show Sunday mornings and he has the same guys call in every time.

Agreed.

Plenty of absurd trade proposals show up here constantly, but at least they typically offer up what we perceive as the Cubs' best prospects. Looking at articles and mssage boards involving the Yankees and Santanna are often really ridiciulous in how may people think that the Yanks can basically rob the Twins of Santana with player packages that are downright insulting.

As many posters have pointed out, we just don't have the players to get Cabrera or Santana. I'm sure either deal would start with Pie, Hill, Colvin, etc. Those other teams involved have better prospects that aren't part of their everyday lineup. I guess we can dream though.

I agree but it will also depend on if those teams want to part with their prospects plus what the Marlins want.

Speaking of teams not wanting to part with their prospects, everything Hendry has said in the last year makes it sound like Pie and Hill are pretty much "untouchables" so I can't see him giving both of them up plus 2 or 3 more top prospects for either Santana or Cabrera.

True. But I also makes them seem more attractive too when he says that....hopefully. Plus, I'm sure all GM's say that about their top prospects.

I think it's not just a Yankee fan mentality. The sportswriters would put together possible Knick trades along the lines of Kevin Garnett for Jerome James, Channing Frye, and Steve Francis for years.

I don't recall if Z's new contract contains a no-trade clause (and if so, to what extent), but wouldn't it make sense for the Twins and Cubs to discuss a possible swap of Zambrano for Santana?

Zambrano's contract is representative of the type of deal the Twins would like to offer (5yr/$90MM) and he's also a player the Twins know can jump right in and keep them competitive without any risk.

The Cubs would throw a prospect or two their way and have to negotiate a long-term deal before making the deal...but I think it's a no-brainer for both sides. Santana is considerably better than Zambrano notching a sub-3 ERA almost every year in the AL of all places. I see the extra money being well spent to get a future hall-of-fame-type like Johan Santana.

The only reason the Twins are willing to offer that type of deal is:

1) He is the best pitcher in the game

2) Because he is the best pitcher, they have to show the fans that they care about keeping him.

3) The Twins know he won't accept such a low deal.

There is absolutely no way that they can devote such a large percentage of their payroll to Zambrano. That would stop the deal even if they consider Z at his highest possible value.

The Twins want Melky Cabrera plus one of Chamberlain/Hughes/Kennedy from the Yankees. If the Yanks can surrender Kennedy rather than Hughes or Joba, they've done a nice job. Sounds like they would consider giving up Hughes though.

After reading some of the speculation from MLB Trade Rumors, I do wonder if the Cubs could be in the running to match the Yankees offer. Of course it would start with Pie and Hill and probably include Patterson plus Cedeno/Theriot (?), but if the Cubs ended up with Fukudome and traded for someone cheap to platoon with Murton (Luke Scott, Seth Smith, etc.) it might be worth thinking about. Of course, the budget would go through the roof, but having Zambrano, Santana, and Lilly as your first three starters would really be dominating. As for the Yankees' offer, Cabrera hasn't shown much and Chamberlain/Hughes/Kennedy all have great potential but Hill has done it at the major league level. I'm sure it won't happen, but it is interesting to think about.

The Yankees have paid $10+ million a year to the likes of Carl Pavano, Clemens ('07), Mussina, etc. That doesn't even factor in the hitters. I assume that the $20 million price tag is the least of the Yankees concerns.

What this sportswriter so willfully ignores is that other teams can easily beat that minor league package. The Cubs could match that offer and our minor league system pales in comparison to the LA teams. If I were the Twins, I would tell everyone the floor is Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche and one of Clayton Kershaw/Chad Billingsley/Jonathan Broxton. First team to add a major leaguer or another elite prospect wins.

If all the Yanks trade is Cabrera and Hughes they made a steal of a deal. Then, they'll sign Fukedome.

According to the New York Post, the Cubs might get into the Johan Santana Sweepstakes.

A young center fielder such as Gomez or Cabrera is a must in this trade as the Twins look to replace Torii Hunter, who recently signed with the Angels. The Red Sox (Jacoby Ellsbury/Coco Crisp), the Dodgers (Matt Kemp) and the Angels (Reggie Willets) are all expected to vie for Santana, and an NL executive said to watch out for the Cubs (Felix Pie) and perhaps the Mariners (Adam Jones).

I wonder what player would get more prospects/value, Cabrera or Santana?

Would they take us seriously with Pie,Hill,Marmol? would anyone round here do that deal?My main prob is once we get him we have to re-sign him and we don't have the budget unless we can move D-Lee or aramis.

FWIW, I don't see anything anywhere else.

Doubt if anything official happens with this deal anytime soon. You would have to assume that this deal would hinge upon whether they can get a long term deal worked out with Santana. No way the Yankees are giving up Hughes, Kennedy and Cabrera for a 1 year rental.

Johan Santana-S- Twins Dec. 1 - 3:32 pm et

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's Lavelle E. Neal III believes the Yankees are now offering Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy in return for Johan Santana.

He also says the Twins are no longer interested in a Red Sox package that includes Coco Crisp rather than Jacoby Ellsbury. If both of his beliefs are true, then it would seem as though the a trade between the Twins and Yankees would get done any day now. However, Neal goes on to say that he thinks the Mets are backing down on not offering Jose Reyes and that Santana might prefer the NL to the AL. Color us skeptical about everything presented here.
