I have trouble believing this:

Graziano On A Yankees/Santana Trade

Recently I asked the Newark Star-Ledger's Dan Graziano about a realistic scenario under which the Yankees could acquire Johan Santana. His take was a bit different than the standard packages we've been hearing.

MLBTR: Give us your take on a reasonable trade package for Johan Santana that the Yankees would consider offering and the Twins would consider accepting.

Dan Graziano: The Twins will need at least one good, proven, major-league player and a couple of prospects in exchange if they decide to deal Santana. Many people have suggested that the Yankees would need to include Robinson Cano in a deal, and that's certainly possible. But the Twins have a

young player (Alexi Casilla) they believe can play second base, and their greater need may be in the outfield, especially with Torii Hunter now gone off to Anaheim.

To that end, Melky Cabrera might be more appealing to the Twins than Cano. Let's assume the Yankees don't want to include Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes in the deal (though Santana might be the only player for whom they'd consider dealing one of those guys), and that Brian Cashman also wants to hold onto Ian Kennedy. The next best pitcher in the Yankees' system is probably Alan Horne. I'm thinking the Yankees could offer a package of Cabrera, Horne and outfield prospect Jose Tabata for Santana. That could be appealing to the Twins, though they might ask for a better pitcher than Horne (or another, such as Marquez, in addition to him), though it would depend on the packages being offered by other interested teams such as the Mets and Red Sox.

The thing to remember in dealing with the Twins, however, is that they might not always be after the prospects everybody knows about. The Twins pride themselves on being able to identify and acquire big-time prospects at the Class A level. Players who have come to the Twins' system at the A-ball level over the years include Jason Bartlett, Lew Ford and Joe Mays, as well as Johan Santana himself and a skinny little hitter whose name at the time was David Arias but later changed his last name to Ortiz and went on to achieve some measure of fame with the Boston Red Sox.

Earlier this year, when the Mets and Twins were talking trade for Luis Castillo, we were trying to figure out who the Mets might have to give up. We were thinking of usual suspects like Kevin Mulvey and Phil Humber, but the Twins ended up dealing Castillo for AA catcher Drew Butera and Class A outfielder Dustin Martin. These were guys I didn't know much about, but I'm not going to be surprised if Dustin Martin ends up being a good big-leaguer someday. The Twins' scouts can spot talent when it's very young. So there may be some players in the Yankees' system (and in those of other interested teams) that the Twins would like and we don't even know about yet.

A of all, Bartlett, Ford, and Mays suck.

B of all, they were acquired for Brian Buchanan, Hector Carrasco, and Roberto Kelly. All players who also sucked.

C of all, this guy is [expletive].

I love how NY writers think the Yankees could get Santana without including any of Hughes, Chamberlain, or Kennedy.

So, does that mean the Cubs could get him without including Hill, Pie, Marmol?

But...but....but.... They may love our a-ball prospects!

I don't even listen to them without Hughes and Joba. If the price for Miggy is high, its not going to be any lower for Santana especially for the Twins to keep him in the AL.

I also think the Red Sox will be more inclined to deal the prospects needed than the Yankees.

NY sportswriters are the southerners of the north.

I think Newark is in New Jersey. Just a guess though.

Southsiders are the New Yorkers of Chicago.

Our colleague Peter Gammons is hearing that the Twins want this three-player package from the Yankees, in any Santana conversation: pitcher Phil Hughes and center fielders Melky Cabrera and Austin Jackson.

Couldn't we match that package?

I know we don't have a pitching prospect with Hughes pedigree, but the Cubs certainly could do better than Cabrera and Jackson.

They might listen to a package that started with Hill and Pie. The problem would be the extension and whether they want to have that much money invested in 2 pitchers (Santana & Zambrano). If they spend that much on Santana can they still get a RF?

With Santana and Zambrano in the rotation, I'd take my chances with Murton in RF.

If we're thinking of getting involved in Santana, we need to forget about that and try to get in on Miguel Cabrera instead.

That's the direction I'd rather go too. I'm curious on which player would command a bigger salary, Cabrera or Santana because as a 1 or 2 year thing isn't good enough, I want a 4 or 5 year deal if the Cubs commit a lot of good young talent in acquiring them.

Oh, I'd definitely prefer using what we have to try and get someone like Cabrera or even Tejada. Santana is great, but the Cubs need key offensive players that are going to come out there (almost) everyday and ideally have an impact.

As many posters have pointed out, we just don't have the players to get Cabrera or Santana. I'm sure either deal would start with Pie, Hill, Colvin, etc. Those other teams involved have better prospects that aren't part of their everyday lineup. I guess we can dream though.

I agree but it will also depend on if those teams want to part with their prospects plus what the Marlins want.

There is a caller, Jerome I believe, who calls into both 1050 ESPN and 660 WFAN in NY. Over the course of perhaps 20 minutes of radio listening the past two weekends, I've heard him rant about how he refuses to give up Cano in a deal for Santana. He also refuses to give up Chamberlain and Hughes. He might include Melky, but doesn't want to.

Anyway, imagine annoying Bronx accent (think Joe Pesci in Home Alone, but as a 40 year old virgin who lives in his mom's attic):

I'M NOT GIVING UP CANOOOOO!!!

(host)You've got to give up something for San

I'M NOT GIVING UP CANOOOOOOOOOO!!!! (spaces added as he emphasizes his point)

(host)But why would the Twins trade

I'M NOT GIVING UP CANO!!!!!

(host)Then get ready to lose Joba and Hughes

I'M NOT GIVING UP JOBA OR HUGHES, AND I'M NOT GIVING UP CANOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Kind of hilarious actually. But this is a fairly sizable opinion. NY never wants to give up a top 5 prospect. They expect to get whomever they want, without giving up much. And in a lot of ways, that's how Cashman has operated. He rarely gives up the better prospects. A few years ago it was Soriano, with Dangelo Jimenez being substituted in as the guy they would give up.

Jerome (who does sound like Pesci) is not indicative of all Yankees fans. Jerome is insane and the radio staions let him on for comic releif. Please do not act like Jerome from the bronx speaks for everyone. Jerome has health problems and is basically a shut in, with nothing else to do but scream about the Yankees and Knicks. So, please use a better sample group than that when bashing Yankees fans.

Yes most fans do not want to give up Cano. I am in the minority. I think if it takes Cano to keep our young pitching so be it. Santana is one of the best pitchers available, but I think the price might be too high. Cano, Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson (or Tabata) is quite pricey for the rights to negotiate a 7/140 with him.
