to take care of the Brewers, have you considered that

• Thursday in Milwaukee, 27-year-old rookie right-hander Jack Cassel is supposed to start for the Padres against the Brewers and their current ace, Yovani Gallardo.

• Friday, the Padres will start Greg Maddux, blasted in two of his last three starts. He's fighting a bad back.

• Saturday, they'll start Chris Young, still recovering from a sore oblique. He's 0-3 with a 7.00 ERA in five September starts.

• And Sunday, it's supposed to be Brett Tomko again. He gave up four early runs to the Giants on Tuesday.

If Sunday is gonna be the deciding game for the WC, they'll throw Peavy.

Agree, but they are currently tied for the WC lead. They could easily be out of it by Sunday.

As Rob said, they are going to throw Peavy on Sunday if it's close, and it seems like the only way it wouldn't be close now is if the Padres had already beat the Brewers a couple times and were 2 games up. 2 games down by Sunday is possible for them, but not likely at all.

Also, the Cubs don't need a lot from the Padres. They need 1, maybe 2 wins from them. If it were any other time besides the final week, no one would be predicting a Brewers sweep.

They are currently 1 game up in the WC, not tied.

Plus if Peavy goes on Sunday, it would be on 3 days rest. Here is how Peavy did on 3 days rest earlier this month:

4IP 7H 8ER 3BB 4K.

Also don't forget to mention that the Padres lost 2 offensive starters Milton Bradley and Mike Cameron this week and that the Brewers are 49-27 at home. Also please mention that the Padres play a night game on the West Coast before flying to Milwaukee for Thursday's game.

I fully expect the Brewers to take 3/4. The Cubs will need to go 3-2 the rest of the season to win the division outright.

You're right. They were tied going into last night's game and one out away from remaining tied.

With Philly and Colorado only one game back, it probably will come down to Sunday night and Peavy on three days rest.

Using same logic. Padres are only 2 games behind D-backs who have lost 2 straight games. So padres are really in the same situation as Brewers except they have a chance to win the division and WC. I would expect them to come to Milwaukee with winning attitude.

Still we should only worry about ourselves and win our games.

It's not going to matter because the Cubs are going to win 4 more games. But, hey, I don't mind if the Brewers lose a couple more games.

The Cubs shouldn't have to rely on the Padres. In fact, they should count on the Brewers winning out.

this is the best post in a week

i hope that all our boys have this mentality right now, i really do

I find it likely the Crew goes 4-1 the rest of the way. If they go 3-2 it will be a miracle. They've an outside shot at sweeping out.

We need to win games, people. I highly suggest that it start tonight.

A very good suggestion. Hopefully the Cubs got the memo. :D

Going 3-2 would be a miracle? While I would certainly not count on anything less than 5-0 from them...the sky is falling mentality is hilarious.

Sky is falling mentality? I seriously find it highly likely the Crew will only lose 1 more game. They're one of the best teams in the league at home, they've got one more against a tomato can and 4 more against a team that just lost one of their biggest power hitters and hasn't been playing all that great lately.

Why is that a 'sky is falling' mentality? That's an honest evaluation based on what I believe to be real factors.

Why should we expect a team to go 7-0 to end the season?

If you're counting on SD and not the Cubs beating two bad teams, that should tell you something more important than counting on SD.

it tells me the cubs aren't that good, but we already knew that

• Thursday in Milwaukee, 27-year-old rookie right-hander Jack Cassel is supposed to start for the Padres against the Brewers and their current ace, Yovani Gallardo.

Have you considered Gallardo is a rookie too? And younger?

• Friday, the Padres will start Greg Maddux, blasted in two of his last three starts. He's fighting a bad back.

Have you considered Ben Sheets is scheduled to start? He's a walking injury. Oh and in addition to starting on 10 days rest, he's given up 14 ERs in his last 13 innings. .317 BAA and 7.88 ERA in September.

• Saturday, they'll start Chris Young, still recovering from a sore oblique. He's 0-3 with a 7.00 ERA in five September starts.

Have you considered that David Bush stinks? 5.60 post AS ERA, 6.47 in Sept. In his only start vs. SD in a pitcher's park, he gave up 7 ERs and 9 hits in 5 innings. The current SD team is hitting .338 against him with a .933 OPS.

And Sunday, it's supposed to be Brett Tomko again. He gave up four early runs to the Giants on Tuesday.

Have you considered that Peavy would get the start if the game is meaningful? If so, have you considered the best pitcher in baseball may actually have a good game even on 3 days rest with the season on the line? He allowed 2 hits to the Brewers last time he faced them.

I'll give you that Friday looks like a mismatch. But both teams have problems. The pitching matchups favor SD after the 1st game. At least look at both sides. If the Brewers are gonna play hard because they're desperate, won't the Padres, who are even more in the race? The Padres have been 5 games better than the Brewers this season, against a tougher schedule and division. The Padres lost 4 straight, but are still 8-4 in their last 12. The Brewers lost 3 of 4, and don't have a 7 game win streak to fall back on.

I'm not sure he was actually saying he expects them to. I think he was saying the Cubs just need to take care of their own business and not have to worry about what the Brewers do.
