You can only put so much pressure on the pitching staff before they crack. These relentless 1 and 2 run outputs by the offense are not only keeping the Cubs a .500 team, they will really come home to roost in the second half.
I don't think he has leverage anymore. I think that is an understatement. As things currently stand, if the Cubs asked Fuku to dress like a clown and dance on top of the dugout between innings, he'd have to do it.
I believe Foster pitched the first Cubs - Sox interleague game, which is when that throwback uniform picture was taken (both teams wore 1906 replicas).
Perhaps the bigger question is what to do with Fukudome for the next 3 years? Do you feel comfortable with him as the starting RF going into 2009? Is there any precedent for a Japanese player returning home and perhaps a payment back to the MLB team (contract buyout)?
A "letdown" game was fairly easy to predict. Losing 2 out of 3 would not be surprising. Following Milwaukee's ego-boosting 4 game sweep at St. Louis, they have now lost 6 of 7. It is only August 1 - nothing is won yet.
