This is also from rotoworld. I hope.assume this is a typo. They mean Royals, not Cubs, right?

Alex Gonzalez-1B-Royals Jan. 12 - 4:20 pm et

Cubs signed infielder Alex S. Gonzalez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Gonzalez, 33, announced his retirement last May after starting out 4-for-36 with the Phillies. It's not much of a surprise to see him back, and he joined the one team he could potentially start for, though the Royals are certain to give Angel Berroa one more chance to keep his job.

Finally, someone to fill the void Neifi Perez's departure left on the Cubs. Tomas Perez's OPS has dropped six years running, bottoming out at 510 last year. He hit .212/.224/.286 while getting 241 at-bats for the Rays. The Cubs shouldn't be reduced to carrying him.

What a stupid signing..All you can do is ask.. Why?

Delino passed the torch to Macias, who in turned pass the torch to Nefti, who pass the torch, not just to Ceasr Izturis, but also Tomas Perez. Why must the Cubs be in love with non skilled middle infielders, who shouldn't be in the majors?

With that said, I expct Tomas to be a last week of ST release.

Meh, just a minor league deal and an invite to ST. Nothing confirmed yet. I doubt this will turn into anything major.

For most teams, that would be true. But this franchise has been more than happy to give lots of times to guys who deserved nothing more than a NRI to ST. You had the recently released from SF Neifi Perez, and the released in ST Glendon Rusch. Then you had a handful of other NRI with no upside guys, like Rey Ordonez, Tony Womack, Enrique (he knows how to play in yankee stadium) Wilson, that all got playing time.

In the big picture, it probably doesn't matter, but when this team signs worthless NRI guys, there's going to be a natural negative reaction out of fear that they'll actually play.

But let's also keep in mind that we were all fretting about the ST invite that Maquis Grissom got, and that turned into nothing.

Yeah, it probably won't matter. But a negative reaction is not unfounded.

While it's just a minor league contract and an invite to ST, this move is indicative of the failure of the front office to recognize what constitutes a good ballplayer.

Is he good on defense? The reason I ask is because he obviously sucks as a whole, and he can't hit with RISP, so I really don't see what Hendry would see in him.

I see no point in this move, but hopefully he won't make it past ST.

Can we really be sure his OPS has bottomed out? I think it's reasonable that it could get worse.

Just thank the Gods Dusty isn't here anymore.

Agreed. Tomas Perez is a textbook example of a signing that should justifiably panic fans of any Baker-managed team.

(I love saying this so I'll say it)

Dusty Baker isn't our manager.

I agree with your overall point, but the year we signed the released in ST Glendon Rusch, he was tremendous for us. I actually like the concept of giving minor league deals to guys who once had a modicum of success, and hope you can get a decent half season off the bench/bullpen from him. But doing it with Dusty Baker was like giving a pyromaniac gasoline, a lighter, lighter fluid, the keys to a vacant building, and rubbing two sticks together to get him started.

Neifi, though, wasn't an NRI to ST. He was released by the Giants on August 17, 2004 and signed by the Cubs 2 days later on a minor league deal with a guaranteed call-up once rosters expanded. They signed him for some needed infield depth, as by then it was apparent that Nomar still wasn't 100% and wouldn't be able to play every single day, leaving good old Ramon Martinez as the only other shortstop on the roster.

And to be fair to Neifi, by some divine miracle, he somehow managed to hit .371/.400/.548 (BA/OBP/SLG) in his 62 Cub at-bats that season. In retrospect, this was probably the worst thing he did that year, because it endeared him to the management and guaranteed his roster spot in '05 and '06.
