Gil Meche’s five-year deal with the Royals will be worth $55 million-$60 million, the Kansas City Star reports.

Incredible. Meche will lead a Kansas City rotation also set to include Odalis Perez. Brian Bannister and Luke Hudson will be the heavy favorites for the next two spots, with Jorge De La Rosa and Zack Greinke among those likely to battle it out for the remaining opening. Dec. 7 - 1:12 pm et

By August, the best pitcher in KC's rotation will be Luke Hochevar.

I'm not sure if 5/60 for Meche trumps 5/44 for Pierre as the stupidest contract of the offseason but it's pretty close.

I just realized AJ freaking Burnett got about as much or less money than Meche did last offseason.

It's times like these I wish there was a ROFL smiley.

You have *GOT* to be kidding me. Now I see why Jim laid off. That's too much, even for us. What are the Royals doing?

I think the Royals got inspiration to spend money after watching us. Though, I don't think they're off to a good start.

In 2007, Meche will make more than 3X the rest of the KC rotation combined.

I don't think that's true, Odalis Perez is set to make about 7.5 or so next year.

Odd, one site said he was due 1.7 next year, but you are right.

Maybe that's how much the Royals owe him, since the Dodgers sent money to them in that deal? I dunno.

If you guys want a laugh, check out the Royals message board. They are asking questions like "Is this the best day of your Royals life?" and other riveting topics. I understand that its symbolic for the organizational philosophy changing, but Gil Meche? C'mon.

Teams are picking awfuly strange times to start spending dough

I feel bad for them. Some of them seem to suspect that Meche isn't good, but can't help but be excited because they actually spent a lot of money and outbid larger-market teams for somebody. I can't say that I wouldn't feel the same way, in their position.

I just listened to an interview of Dayton Moore. He said that they felt that at 28 yrs. old and with Meche's "stuff." They, as an organization, felt he was just coming into his prime and that he would progress into a #1/#2 type pitcher.

They said they had targeted him as well as Miguel Batista and Octovia Dotel.

Cot's made my brain hurt...

Odalis Perez p

3 years/$24M (2005-07), plus 2008 club option

* acquired in trade (from LA Dodgers) 7/06, with about $16.3M left on Perez' contract...

o LAD paying to KC $8M cash

o KC responsible for Dessens' 2006 & 2007 salaries ($2.4M left)

o LAD responsible for Perez' $4.5M bonus

o KC & LAD to split $1.5M 2008 buyout

Looks to me like they're roughly splitting Odalis's contract.

So does that mean their offer to Batista is now off the table?

I believe they're still interested in him, but he didn't directly say it was on or off the table.
