I'll take him. Heck, he's trending better and he's only 28.

Similar pitchers through 27 contains these names:

Chris Carpenter

Jason Schmidt

Matt Clement

That's not all that bad. I think Meche has a shot to improve quite a bit yet. Depends on the dollars.

I wonder how Hendry's unfortunate hospital stay will affect some of these deals.

And look what happened. Little NL cookin', little decent lineup around him, and wa-la good pitcher.

yes, after a major injury in which he missed a full season and completely rebuilt himself as a pitcher. seems like a good bet.

I always thought *not* needing surgery would be a positive thing. Thanks for setting me straight.

Can't match that.

If Meche signs for 4yrs does this make Marshall, Guzman, Mateo and Marmol expendable?

Besides the pen, they don't seem to fit into the Cubs future. Perhaps a year fo running up stats at AAA would make a few of them attractive at the trading deadline.

my point was just that, assuming lilly's elbow doesn't explode this season, his career path is about to diverge from carpenter. if carpenter proves to be a good comp, then a lot of really interesting things are going to happen in the next three years (rehab season, good season, cy young season, in that order).

Meche*

At any rate, I think his best comparable on his list is likely going to turn out to be Clement, though I don't think he'll turn out to be as good of a pitcher.

I assume you mean Meche.

While I fully realize the comparisons don't necessarily translate, when you can say the guy compares with Schmidt, Carpenter, and Clement at 27 I don't see how that means he's terrible and has no shot.

i meant meche, sorry.

schmidt and clement are nice, yes, i just think carpenter is worthless as a comp because his career path is such a mess and so unlikely to be replicated.

Meche to get five four-year offers?

Gil Meche - S - SEA - Dec. 4 - 10:39 pm et

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reports that the Blue Jays, Cubs, Orioles, Mariners and Giants all appear to be willing to go to four years for Gil Meche.

We're more than a little skeptical about this, as there's been no indication that the Mariners have stepped up with that kind of offer to keep him. The Blue Jays appear to be the favorites to sign Meche, especially if the Cubs grab Ted Lilly. Dec. 4 - 10:39 pm et

Sportsline[/url]"]Toronto is in danger of going 0-for-2 in the free-agent pitcher market: The Blue Jays were targeting Lilly and Gil Meche and, despite offering Meche a four-year deal believed to be worth around $34 million, the Jays were suspecting that Meche had a deal elsewhere -- perhaps with the Chicago Cubs (though Kansas City was throwing some money at him, too).

That's a pretty old report.

It is because Meche's "heart" has him leaning towards the Cubs.

Wasn't there a report that said that Meche would decided by tonight?

If we Give Lilly and Meche a combined 80 million dollars I am going to buy a sweet new Carlos Quentin jersey and become a diamondbacks fan.

I'd go to the Dodgers. Crappy management, but at least they have talent. And former Cubs.

Vin Scully + Fox Sports West = win.

I am in man-love with Carlos Quentin and Chris Young so I pick the Diamondbacks.

Yes, but apparently, that didn't say when he'd announce his decision.

Maybe (hopefully) the cubs took their offer off of the table, which would obviously change things.

two of the three pitchers ahead of him just went off the boards. one of those pitchers was signed by a team not interested in his services in the first place, the other signed with a team still interested in his services. thus, demand has not changed, but supply has gone down.

plus it was probably just a negotiating ploy by his agent anyway.

It seems like Piniella wants Meche here and Meche wants to be here. I don't see this one falling through.

Love the D'backs, Angels, Dodgers (my fantasy team's name was Logan White's Honkys) systems. The D'backs used to be horribly run (a testament to how great their system is to survive the Sexson debacle), the Angels and Dodgers alternate between horrible and great acquisitions...but after last offseason...I'm a Marlins man.
