Sources say the Cubs are extending the same promise to Meche that they made to Lilly -- that they will do whatever is necessary to sign the pitcher. The Cubs are hoping that will be enough to knock out the financially strapped Royals and again edge out the Blue Jays.

Don't see it posted anywhere, but FoxSports is now saying that Meche is very close to signing with KC.

yes yes yes...

how can we be outbid by kc? who would want to play there for less? it's a career killer for a pitcher like colorado. in kc you can pitch great and still lose 20!

This is probably Meche's only chance for a big contract, when everybody is going crazy for garbage. 3-4 years from now, Meche will no longer have a lot of untapped potential, he'll just be an old pitcher who never did anything. So really, it doesn't do him much good to avoid "career killer" teams, he should just take whatever he can get.

And Jim might have come to his senses with extra sleep last night.

And the Royals, too. Why would a team with such a limited payroll invest so much in a 4 or 5 starter? If it were the Cubs or Jays, it would make more sense.

I'm glad I'm not a KC fan.

Think Rob Neyer might have a good article about this? :P

Holy Schnickees! Why would the Royals pay anyone that much? It's not like one player will make a difference on their team. I thought Moore was smarter than this.

If the Cubs are truly willing to do whatever it takes to sign Meche, its a sign that Jim Hendry is obviously dumber than Dayton Moore.

Not sure why he would do that, but hey, good for the Royals to make a huge splash.

I agree. Not that getting paid $45 million is a bad way to spend four years, but if you're a competitor, why on earth would you go where playoff hopes go to die?

What a greedy sob. Why in the hell would he want to play for the Royals? He is obviously in it for the money. He could have had a chance to play for two contending teams in the Cubs and Blue Jays. But the prick decided to take the money and run. Screw you Meche.

Apparently about 90% of major league players are greedy pricks then.

You enjoy your below-average $11M per year pitcher, Royals. Good luck with that.

newsflash: the cubs haven't exactly been rolling in pennants the past few years.
