Free agent Gil Meche has reportedly narrowed his choices to the Blue Jays, Cubs and Royals.

It's unclear whether all three teams are offering four years, though it'd come as no surprise if that's the case. We're guessing Toronto for Meche, with Ted Lilly picking the Cubs. Meche is expected to make his decision on Wednesday. Dec. 5 - 11:42 pm et

If we can't get Schmidt, I'd be content with Lilly and Meche.

If we can't get Schmidt, I'd constantly vomit and cry for the next 12 months with Lilly and Meche.

Fixed for me.

Listen, I'm not saying I'd take that over Schmidt. But if Hendry determines he's unable to get Schmidt, I'd rather have Meche in the rotation than someone like Marquis or an in house option like Marmol.

Royals realize that they are going to lose out on Bautista so they blow away Meche, as a reaction the Blue Jays lock Lilly down and we are forced to blow away Schmidt...and by blow away I mean only 6M more per year than Lilly. Thats how it keeps on playing out in my head.

KC Star claims that the Royals backed down on Meche after the bidding got to 4 years and $40 million.

The Royals didn’t blink in their pursuit of Meche, 28, until the price threatened to move past $40 million for four seasons. Meche was 11-8 with a 4.48 ERA last season in 32 starts for Seattle and has won more than 11 games only once in his six-year career.

The Cubs are generally viewed as the front-runners for Meche, assuming they don’t sign higher-profile pitchers, such as Jason Schmidt, to fill out their rotation. The Blue Jays are also making a strong push.

“We came here knowing it would be competitive,” Moore said. “It comes down to supply and demand.”

OK, I just researched for about 40 minutes...I can't figure out for the life of my why Gil Meche is desired so strongly. I know supposedly is an underachiever or something, but why?? What in his career shows us that he is going to every pan out?

Well, last time we outbid the Royals for someone it turned out all right... (Jacque)

Go look at his highlights on mlb.com. The guy has a curveball that is incredible. Also has a fastball up to 94MPH a good slider and a change up.

I just became a Meche fan.

:)

Yeah, but Guzman doesn't have his experience. Seriously, from the look of those highlights I wonder why the guy only won 11 last year. He really has great stuff from the llok of them.

I haven't heard much about Meche other than he's an very very talented underachiever. Why is he not living up to his talent? Is it laziness? Is he not choosing good pitch sequences? Does his breaking stuff sometimes fail him, leading to hits?

The only reason I ask is because if his errors are something correctable, ala Clement, it might not be quite so bad to sign him as is normally thought, although probably a risky signing nonetheless.

If you look at his game log last year you see a lot of quite good no decision starts which kind of explains his low W-L stat and a a couple very bad outings which go at least a way toward explaining his decent but slightly high ERA. Looked like a lot of quality starts that again he didn't get a W on.

So, Guzman doesn't have the "experience" to be a talented, yet crappy pitcher, is your reason to go after Meche? Meche would be fine if the deal is 2 yrs say $10 mill (5 per), but $40 mill over 4 yrs...IS NOT IDEAL for NEW AJ BURNETT.

And yes, I'd prefer Guzman to Meche, IN A HEARTBEAT.

His win total is insignificant. It's the rest of his totals that make him not good. You do realize he's not good, don't you? Here's proof in case you need it:
