Congrats to Carniby for his view that a lot of us on this forum don't exactly share ;)

From a forum on Northsidebaseball.com, Carniby writes: "Keep Dusty. … That's right, I said it. I don't see a viable alternative. Uncle Lou [Piniella], he will only last three years here at most. [bob] Brenly, I doubt they will go down that road. Dave McKay or Dave Duncan from the Cardinals, Jerry Manuel from the Mets, Don Cooper from the White Sox, Larry Bowa or Tony Pena from the Yanks. Bobby Valentine from Japan … None of those would be markedly better than Baker. This team, as assembled, is [garbage]."

People are speculating that it will either be right before or right after the All-Star break, but they are forgetting that this is Jim Hendry we're talking about. Jimbo wouldn't throw out a week-old, half-eaten donut if it had any kind of sentimental value."

Well stated Carniby.

I'm not so sure that the team doesn't need a change in coaching. In fact, I think it does. But its hard to point to many games and say it was Dusty's fault. You can't even totally blame him for the lack of plate discipline or lack of fundamentals. For the past 5 years, the Cubs have been loaded with guys who have little plate discipline and poor fundamentals regardless of where they have played. Dusty always seems to defend his players, and that's why in the past, he has gotten a lot out of teams that were not so great on paper.

I agree that the team, as assembled, is garbage. I might be in the minority, but I point the finger straight at the GM, Jim Hendry. He deserves most of the blame. He doesn't know the value of the walk at all. He hasn't shown an unwillingness to dish out some money, as managers in the past, but he's been willing to dish out millions at Neifi Perez and middle relief. The capital he earned by getting players like Lee and Aramis has worn off with me a long time ago.

I agree that MacPhail/Hendry should be the first to go because they got the players but IMO that ain't happening. That being said Baker has to go now. Why?

-We have to se what Murton has

-Leaving a pitcher like Guzman on the bench for no reason

-Giving poorly skilled vets way too much playing time

-Pitcher abuse

-Horrible at strategy

-Bad influance on hitters (swing away)

-Where are the great free agents he was suppose to recruit?

Hendry has built a very very bad team but Baker has made this situation as bad as it could be. Little League teams have better fundamentals than these guys and Bakers excuses and blaming others EVERYTIME has got to end. I'd like to see all 3 fired and let's get a fresh start from the top but IMO the Trib won't do that and they once again will just give Cub fans a little taste and hope that feeds their hunger while the bigger problem stays in charge and makes the moves that made this team the debacle it is.

Also, is it possible that Hendry let Baker influance him too much on some player moves? I'm not saying this is true but it's possible. Not all the moves but some of the signings like Perez, Rusch and even back to Estes.

I'm sort of hoping for a domino effect, all the way to MacPhail.

In my opinion Andy is going to leave on his own when something else comes along. Execs like moving on and up, he's been here too long. I feel that firing Baker and allowing Hendry one last managerial hire, and chance to make it work, will then expose him to being the next on the chopping block. Keeping Baker just prolongs the amount of time Hendry will have to make things work, because Baker will always take the most flack for any struggles until he is gone.

The GM gets 2 managers. So Hendry will not go until another manager has also failed. I will say though the longer he holds on to Dusty the shorter the string for the next manager is going to be.

The fact that Hendry should be gone should by no means be used as support for the idea that Dusty should remain. It's faulty logic, with no justifiable support.
Agreed. Keeping Dusty just because Hendry and MacPhail should also go would be a case of two wrongs not making a right. I want all three gone, but some of that is better than none.

From Derek Smart on Cubs Town: "The argument for ridding the team of Dusty and Co. has little to do with the club's current record and everything to do with their basic failure to understand and utilize their players' skill sets, their abject bungling of the most rudimentary of strategic devices and, most damning of all, what has proven to be a fundamental inability to get young players to the next level. This group of men has failed. If they are not elsewhere by July 14, it's time to storm the castle."

I like the reference to Bastille Day, and I like that he assumes the reader made the connection.
