Is the mighty Pujols really involved in this? Grimsley says that a former employee of the KC Royals and personal fitness trainer referred him to a source for amphetamines. Grimsley says that this personal trainer provided him with “amphetamines, anabolic steroids and human growth hormone.” The trainer's name was Chris Mihlfeld, a Kansas City-based 'strength and conditioning guru.' Mihlfeld was employed bythe Royals as Strength And Conditioning Coordinator.

Mihlfeld has been Albert Pujols’ personal trainer in Kansas City before Pujols was drafted by the Cardinals.

Thanks CubbieRich...I should have posted more than the link...and to show that this is not just some crazed Cub fan...Deadspin is generally a cardinals friendly site isn't it?

yep, they're all cards fans.

As a Cub fan, I would take NO pleasure if this is true. First because Pujols seems like a likeable and legit guy. Second because it would ABSOLUTELY DESTROY BASEBALL for the best hitter in the game to be taken down at his absolute peak. Rest assured though, I doubt this is true

I completely echo your sentiments. I do not want to see this pan out to be true.

"I can tell you that under the duress of federal questioning, there's no way Mihlfeld doesn't admit that Pujols is really 35"

I'd be disappointed if this proved to be true, but not shocked. His home run rate before he got hurt this year was Bonds-ian.

and the way he got hurt is just really odd? didn't it strike anyone else that he pulled a side muscle while running? I would expect that on a hard swing and a miss maybe, but it seems odd the way it happened.

I wouldn't be surprised but I'm not accusing yet.

The evidence linking Grimsley to Mihlfeld is undeniable. Grimsley has stated that Mihlfeld helped him with recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The evidence linking Pujols to Mihlfeld is also undeniable. There are plenty of reports about this, including apparently in an article from SI.

That doesn't mean absolutely that Mihlfeld was the one who supplied Grimsley with HGH or amphetamines. And regardless of whether or not he referred Grimsley to a supplier of banned substances does not mean that he referred Pujols to a supplier banned substances. Let's keep those things in mind.

I despise the Cardinals as much as anyone, but something like this isn't just bad for Pujols or for the Cardinals if it's true. It's bad for baseball. I sincerely hope that Pujols is clean.

That being said, there's a lot of smoke right now around Grimsley, the Royals, and Pujols. And where there's smoke, there's often fire. I hope there's not, but this certainly has raised my eyebrows.

I hope that Mihlfeld didn't supply anyone with banned substances. I'm a Royals fan, and I'd be very disappointed in the Royals as well if they had such a close association with someone providing banned substances to players.

I sure hope the rumors about what is in the affidavit are 100% false.

I'm not ashamed at all to say I hope it's true. I've already come to grips that my second favorite player of all time juiced. It would be nice if the player I despise also juiced as well.
Completely agreed.

And if this ends up true, it wouldn't be all that bad for baseball. Pujols isn't the face of baseball though he may be the best hitter in the game.

Thats not quite what it says... it says the trainer (supposedly Mihlfeld) referred him to a source for amphetamines. At some later point, the source, not the trainer, provided him with amphetamines, steroids, and hgh. So what it comes down to, if the name really is Mihlfeld, is that Grimsley claims the Pujols' trainer told him where he could get amphetamines, and through that amphetamine source, he also obtained other drugs. Not good, but certainly not a smoking gun.

That's right. The face of baseball is Joe Morgan.

Some of you would actually be happy to hear this? As a baseball fan, I hope no players (although I know this won't happen) ever get busted again. Especially a player like Pujols. I would say the same for a player like DLee. These type of players need to be clean, not only for their fans, but for Baseball as a sport.

Nor do I. As much as I dislike the Cardinals, I have tremendous respect for Pujols and his abilities.

Now if this was Edmonds, however.....

Aren't we starting to play "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" here, except with steroid users? It seems like the dirty, cheating trainers, players and suppliers can be linked to most ball players. The media (and me!) have been salivating over those blacked out names all day, and any connection to a big name is going to be overblown. Just because a guy who trained Pujols seven years ago gave another guy the name of a steroid supplier doesn't exactly suggest Pujols used. Is it possible? Sure, but by those standards, so is nearly every other big leaguer.

I'd love to see the Cards or Sox take a fall just like anyone. (Didn't Jeff Nelson and Jim Thome sound suspiciously defensive yesterday after the news that Grimsley name-dropped came out?) But making reckless accusations without rock-solid evidence is going to lessen the significance when we actually find that evidence on a player. Let's not cry wolf.

There's smoke everywhere in MLB, too. Does that mean everything's on fire?

And if there is any evidence that Lee/Pujols/Manny/Ortiz/Jeter/Clemens used, it would be terrible for baseball. Those 6 are the poster kids for what's "good" in baseball, and it would do irreperable damage.

Thank you tree. As long as baseball stays readily available for me to view, I could care less how the faces of the game are portrayed. If my enemies go down in the process, then that's just tremendous.

Mihlfeld was the Royals strength and conditioning coach in 2003 and 2004. He was a minor league strength and conditioning coach for five years. And he's also Mike Sweeney's trainer. That means he's associated with a lot of major league players. It's simply absurd to think that he referred all of these players to a supplier of performance enhancing substances.

Pujols shouldn't be implicated any more than anyone else who's trained with Mihlfeld.

Agreed, guilt by association doesn't work. If my co-worker is a druggie, but nobody found out until after he left, does that mean I am too? I mean, I worked with him on many projects, sometimes quite a bit of overtime.....

You see, sometimes, a working relationship never goes deeper than professionals working together.

Burn him..., burn the witch!!!

I don't like this climate..., I don't like it at all.
