Funny, all I could think of as Pujols stepped to the plate was that Nike commercial in which he wears the monster mask and stomps around like a madman. It's fitting given the carnage in Houston.

My thoughts exactly.

Sounds crazy, but I think I'd pulled a Bobby Cox a la playoffs in 1985 and maybe intentionally walked Pujols to keep that from happening.

I'm shocked they pitched to him. I wouldn't let their best player beat me if I had a chance to clinch. I would have taken my chance with the next batter.

I knew if Edmonds was going to get on base, that Pujols was somehow going to either tie up or hit the home run.

And that being said, I would had pretty much give him a IBB and take my chances on a iffy Sanders. (his back injury that is, since I'm not sold that he's back to 100%)

Pujols is the person you do not want to mess with during clutch situations.

Albert's such an arogant jerk. He walked to first.

I cried when I saw Andy go "Oh my gosh."

Andy's got his rings. Astros fans don't deserve it anyway.

That was still pretty rough. I'd prefer the Astros fans to be happy than to have Cardinals fans having more reason on why everyone should kiss Alberts behind. We of all people know what its like to lose this kind of game..

First: From my experiences, I actually enjoy chatting with Astros fans, then Cardinals fans. The Astros fans are very much like the Cubs fans, in that they believe their team is curse, and they ALWAYS think the negative instead of the position. Whereas the Cards fans have the unbearable arrogance, this makes me  . If I had my choice, I'd root for the Stros, as, IMO, they have classier fans, then the Cards.

Second: Pujols is the most talented hitter on the Cards, but we know who is the player they want up at the plate......David Eckstein. Say what you want, but David is one heckuva "old school player" and you KNEW he was going to start something. (Call it a Cub gut-feeling). Everybody is kissing Pujols' bottom, but the real hero was David Eckstein, plain and simple.

Third: So the Cubs aren't the only team to be burned by the Eckstein." Hmmmm...good to know.

That's just due to exposure. Fairweather fans tend to only show their true colors when in their own element, and outside of the southwest, Astros fans don't act the same. Having had a good dose of both, I find Astros fans to be worse. Cards fans are consistent, even if painfully obnoxious. There is nothing worse, IMO, than a fan who is silent until his team has locked something up, and talks like he was into it the whole time. Fans who can't come close to consistently selling their stadium out. Fans who won't wear their colors unless they are winning. Fans who talk smack even though they have only the most rudimentary knowledge of the game, etc., etc.

Screw 'em. If the Astros get eliminated, most of their "fans" will forget about it in a couple of weeks anyway.

It's odd, but we've never had an Astros troll show up here. On the other hand, we've been inundated with Cards trolls at times. This tends to color my perceptions of who I'd like to win.

I need to fact check, but while I was trying not to pass out from yelling, did I hear this right. The Astros were 81-1 when leading after 8 this year?

Correct. The 1 loss was to the Cubs on the last Friday of the regular season...seems like years ago.

Yeah. The only game they lost was the save Lidge blew against the Cubs the last series of the year.

I'm light headed.

Anyone else think it's hilarious that Garner didn't call for the IBB considering the strike out artist himself was on deck?

No, but the many Astros fans just disappear when they aren't doing well. That really irks me.

Is it really fair to categorize fans based off of "trolls" on a message board? I think it's a bit silly to base your opinion on a team off of fans you've never met. Not that trolls are the only reason you dislike the Cards. Just sayin.

That said... my GOD was that clutch from Pujols. Simply unreal.

But we hope the good posters make up for the bad ones. This is just another chance for me to thank you for a great forum Tim.

As the owner of the site, I think it's pretty easy for me to have my perceptions of a fanbase colored by having to deal with a literal invasion of trolls as we did last August (2004). For a while, it caused real problems for us on the admin/moderator side.

Plus, having gone to college in Champaign, there were plenty of face to face encounters with arrogant Cards fans to cement the bias long before I ever started up the site.

I really enjoy having our current Cards fan contributors. But in general I don't think there's a more arrogant fanbase in baseball than "Cards Nation". Except, perhaps, for Yankees fans.

Not really. It was more Lidge's mistake than Pujols' ability on that AB. Most power hitters in MLB hit that ball for a HR. Lidge threw that right down the middle of the plate. That was a BP pitch if I've ever seen one.

That might be testament to XZero's post; enough Astros fans/trolls don't post enough? Tough to hate a fan base that isn't there?

No worries. I should also say that there are an awful lot of very thoughtful, insighful and respectful Cards fans out there. The bad apples ruin the bunch for me, though.

I do still try to treat everyone as individuals, though, even if you are Cards fans!

That last sentence sums it up for me.

Up until I moved down here, I felt the same way.

As a Colts fan, I just sporadically saw the baseball game.

However, when Edmonds walked, I pretty much expected a HR. Lidge wasn't his typical self and Pujols nearly hit one off him the other game (forget which game, though). I didn't see the HR, but when I switched back over and Izzy was in, I pretty much knew what happened.

I definitely would have walked him. Heck, that thought might've crossed my mind if the bases were loaded. He's come up big so many times before in the clutch -- but, considering it doesn't exist, he surely can't be a clutch hitter, can he?

I still think the Astros will probably win the series with Oswalt and Clemens going. But it's the exact same situation as last year, now with the Cards having all the momentum from a walk-off homer. This game was huge, what a clutch play by a great player.

Posted

It should be noted that I said right after Berkman hit his jack that "if this is destined to be a great series, then the Cardinals will dump a three-spot in the ninth and send this to St. Louis". I said that to a Cards fan on another board.

Welllll...I guess this is destined to be a great series.

What a job by the Cardinals. Innings like that is why they are in the playoffs. You've got to respect the hell out of the Cards for doing all that, with 2 outs, against the current best closer in the game, Brad Lidge. Simply amazing performance.

Not that it matters, but Izzy threw both the 8th and the 9th.

Raisin wants it to be known to all that he called Pujols' HR as he was walking up to the plate (he's omniscient apparently).

I hate the Cards so much.

gee, gutsy. who didn't see that coming?

Whatever, you wish you had my mad skillzzzzz.
