Jesse Rogers of ESPN is reporting the Cubs have completed a trade with the Athletics for starting pitcher Aaron Civale. The Athletics had recently designated Civale for assignment, making this a low-wattage trade to shore up the Cubs' injury-decimated staff.

Civale, 31, was designated for assignment on July 15, ahead of the team's return from the All-Star break. He signed as a free agent with the Athletics in February and started the season well, going 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA over his first nine starts, but posted an 8.25 ERA in three June starts and a 10.29 ERA through two July starts. He also missed time with right shoulder tendinitis; since coming off the injured list, he gave up 20 runs over 19 innings.

Going back to the Athletics is Aiden Moffett, a 22-year-old right-hander in Single-A Myrtle Beach. Moffett has pitched out of the bullpen for the Pelicans, throwing 21 innings over 15 appearances with a 7.71 ERA. While he has struck out 24 batters in those 21 innings pitched, he also walked an incredible 37 batters during that time.

He was really really good for us last September in long relief by simply spamming cutters way more than he ever had before or since.  Hopefully it's just that simple to get him back there.

He's breathing and has an arm. Just the way Jed likes it.

Glancing at Moffett's stat line to write this piece, and literally LOLed at that walk number.

94 walks in 80 innings if you combine his amateur and pro career. there must be something there if teams are even allowing him to pitch at this point

Yeah, the stuff has to be dynamic if teams are still letting him go all Ricky Vaughn every few nights.

They looking to have him start or for the bullpen,  maybe he'll be ok if it just for the bullpen.

With Taillon back against Detroit,  theyre in no desperate need for a SP now.

Imanaga,  Boyd, Peterson,  Assad , and Rea are the other SP

Jed Hoyer is such a bum

I get it, but I just don't think much is available right now. Have you looked at the AL? It's a bunch of middling teams all bunched together. Everybody is a "contender" right now.

Yea, hes just trying to get whatever available arms he can grab now to get through July.

getting Taillon back will free up Assad or Rea for the bullpen next week, my guess Pomeranz will definitely and maybe Thielbar could get the boot.

Detmers would be such a great get, and I don't see why this FO can't swing a trade like that after all these years.  When was the last time they made a big trade deadline move as buyers?  Quintana?  We deserve more as fans than one or two of those moves every decade.

Guaranteed you complained about the Quintana trade for years.

Isaac Paredes was a much bigger get than Reid Detmers would be

But Detmers would have a bigger impact on a playoff run than Paredes did.
