I'll buy the metrics but also if anyone can point to an example of a team missing 80% of its opening day rotation, would love to see it. let's not miss the forest for the trees, this was a bad staff at the beginning of the year, and it's absolutely awful at the moment.

anyways, there's an actual game going on, hoerner/ramirez/amaya wasted a happ leadoff double, assad getting wild in the second inning.

Not 80%, but the Braves have three of their projected SP's on the IL-60 right now. The Cubs only have two on IL-60, with two on IL-15 and one of those back soon.

But yeah, I don't want to play it off as "The Cubs don't have a lot of injuries" just that a few other teams also have had a lot of injuries and it's not a training staff issue so much as an unfortunate bad happenstance (though should also be fair to mention the Cubs' staff has some injury concerns on paper and they've all seemingly come to fruition).

The Cubs aren't even in the top-10 according to this metric. You can buy this specific one or not; that's really not the point. But there are 29 other teams and what the Cubs are going through isn't so special. They have faced a lot of injuries. Other teams have as well. This idea that it's the training staff is just searching for an answer to a question when the correct one is right in front of you, but you just don't like it because there isn't an easy scape goat.

Yeah, a lot of these injuries are fluky.  Cabrera got hurt while making a play at first base.  Boyd got hurt while playing with his kids.  Horton was always a high risk candidate for re-injury given his history.  Nobody would have predicted Steele basically blowing out his elbow.  It sucks, but it is what it is.  Brown is their most important pitching asset now and it doesn't seem like that serious of an injury, relatively speaking.

not only does conforto swing before PCA has a chance to steal, he makes two outs with that swing.

Conforto had a good week or two but is back to being straight ass

I assume Brown will be out longer than 15.  He has had neck problems before and it lasted.

Is there a metric that Adjusts for projected war/innings?

Yeah, they may not have the most injuries, their position players have actually been remarkably healthy (blame me when they start going down), its the fact that all of their injuries seem to be concentrated on the starting rotation (and some bullpen) is wild and more damaging than a team that might have their injuries spread out amongst different positions.

Batting Nico 6th is a bold choice Craig.

Conforto starting and batting second very bold as well.

I think there's three things that lead to the exasperation around the Cubs pitching injuries -

  • 80% of our rotation has missed or will miss considerable time for injuries. Combined with the emergence of Brown and him now going down, there's not much more to be said here
  • The lack of promising young arms waiting in the wings at Iowa. This is where Wiggins and Birdsell would have been penciled in and relieved some of the angst. Horton was that guy last year. We just lack the Didier Fuentes and Logan Henderson's that the other teams at our competitive level have that can be called up and provide young upside. Seems like we have some up and coming arms at the lower levels, so I hope there's more of a priority around holding onto them and restocking our upper end of the farm moving forwards
  • Fluke injuries or not this year, our rotation was compiled with mainly guys who have traditionally had injury/inning concerns. Cease was available. His arm could blow at anytime, but he's been a workhorse 5 years now with TOR ability. Many of us wanted him because of this.
