I've been pretty calm about all of this, but if they walk away from the deadline and their only other acquisition is a Charlie Morton, then I'd want Jed gone following the season and is the exact reason I didn't want him given an extension yet.

I want more 100% but I’m not going to be all that mad if we don’t empty the farm for guys that may or may not be all that worth it. Even the top end starters available aren’t exactly aces. Good pitchers? Absolutely. #1’s that are shut down? Nah

just watched this and the gist of what he said is that the cubs are trying to get more stuff done, but they're being reticent to pony up big prospects. it sounds like they still know pitching is a need and they're trying to address that, but they're not wanting to give up a top guy for a rental, so it's a question of whether one of the team control guys is attainable.

my read is - it's not like a trade for a big name is lined up and we're sorting out the details, but they're still pushing hard. probably won't pay the price necessary for a top rental arm, so it's either they land a gore/cabrera type or a cheaper rental option

The Padres made another deal, getting Will Wagner from the Blue Jays.

And fwiw to all the people freaking out about lack of reports, this trade was broken by the Padres tweeting it. No one else had it.

I don't know about you, but I'm cool with Assad joining the rotation and not getting another SP.

Sad Am Fine GIF by MOODMAN

Need a TORP or potential TORP imo... Do you really want to go into the playoffs with Boyd/Imanaga and ??? afterwards.

Surprised the Dodgers haven’t done anything

Mostly agree but I think the fact some of their crazy overpriced free agents have either A)been hurt or B)underperformed have given them pause for once. I guess every team has a budget....even LA apparently

It gives the appearance that these orgs care more about winning than the Cubs front office does

Of course they do. Jed just has to be competitive enough to fill Wrigley.

Counter argument (or point, not necessarily argument) to your last paragraph is the Correa to Houston deal fell all the way apart. Then they were able to start it back up this afternoon and get it done. The groundwork has been laid. You can go from not close to done deal in one phone call.

Don’t disagree, but my issue is that this would be a complete contradiction to the Tucker/Cam deal.  Are you going for it or not?

That's the Blue Jays current starting 3b? Probably not a good sign for us and Castro

I have not followed the Blue Jays closely this season but I see no reason they can't just use Barger full time at 3B instead of splitting between 3B and RF.

yeah he caveated everything he said with "things could change in the last 90 minutes, who knows"

i do think "big SP with team control or middling SP rental" squares with everything we've been hearing for a while now though

Wagner has 114 ABs on the season.

Well, the Cubs will probably make a few deals in the next hour. I'm not worried about that much.

How much I like the deals, will certainly be the rub.

You are way more confident than I am. I was earlier, but not so much any longer. I still think Cabrera is the most likely controlled pitcher.

Yea I guess once they get Varsho back they move Lukes to RF > Barger back to 3b. But I fully suspect a trade to happen there with Varsho's injury history.

It's also well within the realm of possibility that Jed put a bunch of take it or leave it offers on the table for teams like the Twins and Nationals which won't be withdrawn until the deadline.

Maybe Minnesota and Washington are shopping around trying to get better deals for Gore/Ryan, but if those offers are open, all it will take is a phone call to make it happen.
