It does. Wonder if the Cubs just were not interested in Bednar or the Pirates asked for more from the Cubs because of being in the division.

It's gotta be the inter division tax, maybe they were asking for Bally here.

I feel like catcher has been the Pirates' white whale for at least the last two decades.

Hey, they had Russel Martin for two amazing years 10-11 years go! You take your Russel Martin slander elsewhere, good sir!

Ummmm. This site is social media.

Technically yes, but this is nothing like reddit, twitter, Facebook, etc. where people who know nothing of baseball let alone trade values come in here and spout hot takes. There's still plenty of hot takes here, but usually with a little something to back it up.

When this is over, I hope we find out who was asking for him and who for that jed declined.

I'm always fascinated by these, don’t know why, but I’m always curious what didn’t happen.

Jed's team never leaks. We won't know anything until they release it to the media.

I realize this. And that is why I am still hopeful. But I am watching mlb trade deadline special and the Cubs are not even talked about, with the exception of Rick Hahn saying if Cease is traded the Cubs make the most sense.

It's actually anti-social media.

If I was in a Make-a-wish kind of scenario,  I would probably choose to be in the room for the week of the trade deadline.  The machinations of this stuff are utterly fascinating to me, and though I've heard countless stories,  I still can't quite understand how these moves go down.

This would be amazing. Yes, I would love to be in the room where the Cubs FO discusses moves.

I like that trade for the Royals. Bergert and Kolek for Fermin when they have Carter Jensen near ready

Yep. Starting to get concerned. They helped their team some, but there is more to do. This would be a c- deadline.

i don't think there's any way we get to the deadline without at least 1-2 more moves.

i'm telling myself things are quiet because they're still focused on big-game hunting and there are less leaks around those types of targets, and we'll only shift to our (more attainable) fallback plans once we get closer to the deadline.

I think this is exactly it. They're trying to get the Marlins, Nationals or Twins to blink and if they don't, the Cubs pivot to a rental. There's a still a ton of big rental names out there.

Mets are going for it

Not sure I'd classify Mullins as going for it. Hot start to 2025 but been bad for a while now.

Jed knows the needs to get us to the top. He’d be foolish to stand pat. There is no excuse, it’s not like we’re barely a wild card team this year.

I feel like Jed's deals are often some of the last ones to come out. Maybe I'm imagining that, though.

However, he got extended already so not total desperation. Its not like he has been told get to the NLCS at minimum or else.

Rationally, I know this. And as long as rentals like Kelly, Gallen, Cease, Morton etc are still around the Cubs do have fallbacks. I just don’t understand what would make the price of a controlled pitcher go down. Why would the Marlins, Twins or Nationals lower their price on a guy they can just keep and trade next year? I think the price is set. Do the Cubs want to pay it. Period.
