To be a slave to Houser' splits with Brujan is nonsense, I could see if the guy you're platooning with is a quality bat from the left side.  Splits become immaterial when that left handed bat is completely woeful, you lose nothing by starting Shaw.

I mean , that was the point I was making . With that said , I bet that was Counsells reasoning . Not saying he is right

Shaw still has much better splits against righties than Brujan does

Counsell is prioritizing Houser’s splits over Shaw’s and Brujans . Simple as that . Look Brujan horsefeathers sucks , everybody knows that and I am in no way defending Counsell . I said this twice already .

At the end of the day whatever , really don’t care that much , I  just hope it doesn’t cost them on defense .

I don’t think it’ll matter hugely in the long run but I don’t love sitting a guy (for an inferior player) who is finally emerging offensively. Let him cook.

"Protecting" Shaw from "failure"?

Both the days off have been against sinker-heavy starters, I suspect there's a certain repertoire-based weakness they feel he has that they're shielding him from

That’s fine if they had a better 3B replacement, but Brujan is just brutal

Drives me crazy that he is still on the team....you can't tell me there isnt a more useful scrap heap player somewhere. Where is Mastrobouni

I thought Hoyer should have been fired when he signed him.

Didn't He trade Mervis for him?

I think you're right, but Hoyer could have given Mervis away and found someone wandering the streets near Wrigley instead of Brujan.

Having Brujan at AAA as emergency depth is fine.

Having Brujan on your MLB roster with no replacement is abject failure.

The Royals just DFA'd Cavan Biggio - He isn't good, but he's still better than Brujan.

I understand why he made the move. You’re not getting anything for Mervis outside of a lottery ticket. Might as well take a chance on a former top prospect from not that long ago and see if you can make something happen. I’m with everybody else in that I hope we upgrade his roster spot at the deadline.

Counsell said today is purely based on Houser's splits.

I think it's more splits related and Shaw just isn't high enough on the pecking order to out-hit the splits right now. McGuire also over Kelly, too.

But Brujan is worse than Shaw against righties. Makes no sense, especially with Shaw hitting better recently.

We have to get beyond the idea that Shaw is the only actor here. Houser is an actor. Splits are cool! But they ignore the other party.

I am Captain Shaw. I have written what feels like 20 articles on him in four months. But Counsell isnt a moron. The splits for Houser matter as much as the splits from Shaw and Brujan. The Cubs have decided that they want as many LHH in thr lineup as possible. So much so they also placed McGuire in after an off night.

Baseball is one of the only sports where the “defense” (pitching) is the initiator of the action, and the offense is the one that reacts. Which really does set the sport apart.

of course I 99% of the time think getting too cute with your lineup rather than just putting the best 9 guys out there is a mistake.
