To be fair, that's not really realistic. I don't believe there has been a season in which only one team has won over 90 games in almost 100 years.

I understand that they use weighted averages and running a trillion sims, but there isn't going to be a season like that anytime soon, so while I might argue that 88 wins is a reasonable (30th percentile?) outcome for a pretty good team,  I understand what he's trying to say.

Still, over 90 wins is not a team contending for a playoff spot, its a playoff lock. Adjust your scale to "Mediocre, contender, elite: and I'd agree. Around .500 is the definition of mediocre.

Yeah unless we're like, changing the sample group to just be big market teams, calling 83-90 wins 'mediocre' is just not really how that word works.

Just to wrap up the Cardinals series- the big story was half empty Busch Stadium

Half is generous. It looked like a Pirates game had broken out

I was expecting to see more Cubs fans there too. I know it's a weekday day game but still.

as someone that went to the thursday day game,  i can confirm it was the heat. thank goodness the cubs won because that would’ve been a brutal way to spend a few hours otherwise.

Maybe Thursday was the heat. But the other 3 games were night games. I know they were hot too. But Cardinals are not drawing like they did previously.  Hot or not they would have normally had 40,000+. They barely had 30,000 at the most attended game.

For the Cubs series the heat was definitely a factor.  I had opportunities to go to 2 games of the series and skipped both because it was just awful out.  As TT said though, I was at a Royals game earlier and it was sparse on an absolutely beautiful night to be at a game.  The fans are pissed and I don't think they're coming back until Mozeliak is gone.  He's just such a condescending prick in interviews that I honestly don't blame their fanbase for being done with him.

It's Bowden but he said today that the Cubs are heavily involved everywhere in terms of trade talks and expects them to be the trade deadline winners for the NL Central (whatever that means).

ZiPS sees a lot of good positive regression coming for Taillon, Brown, and Horton.  Only guy I saw on the negative side of the ledger is Pomeranz (which...duh).

Bucs just swept away the Red Birds in PItt....3 shutouts in a row I believe. Keller looked great today: he went 7 scoreless and I would guess his price just went up

The heat doesn't help but it is not the primary reason.  I was at a weeknight game earlier this month and it was maybe half full, and that was largely because Royals fans were at least 40% of the crowd.

Sadly the current makeup of the rosters or the conditions conducive for enjoying a game are NOT the factors limiting attendance.

It's the DOWNTOWN environment that is the culprit.  There is a lawless culture that has been allowed to grow and permeate the whole downtown area. Simply put you just don't feel safe outside of normal banker's hours.

It's not the safe and vibrant party type atmosphere it has been in years past.  It has fallen off just like Bud Light..... to "its the end of happy hour you know where your car is parked?".   Sure, the park and ride share services help access. But the benches, like most downtown, will a have a camped out homeless panhandler.

Last summer I paid $30 to park in a "supervised" parking lot...4 other people and I waited 1.5 additional hours to file police reports...yes - 5 smashed windows on outside row. (No, only 2 were Cub fans) Cop indicated that most violations were smash and grabs drug fueled.

No that’s definitely not it, I live in a suburb and go downtown 20 times a year for events and don’t feel unsafe in the slightest.  Maybe next time you’re there exhale a bit and leave the dog whistles at home.

I feel like this post could have been a letter to the editor at any point over the last 70 years.
