I think last year was your chance to get Johnson. We kept Eberflus and now Caleb has had a year of being developed by someone else. I’m gonna guess we missed our window with him.

we shouldn’t lose a sales contest against any other team in the HC market this offseason. we will but we shouldn’t

I'm sure bears internet will be falling over themselves to have the the most doom-y, angry takes they can imagine, but I think even the realistic take is pretty bad for the short-term.

It's theoretically possible to overcome a bad loss that drops you to 4-4, but I wouldn't bet on this team in this state doing it.   The keys to having a decent season were staying healthy and banking wins early, and neither of those happened.

There's literally zero chance Eberflus is getting fired mid-season. It's just not going to happen.  But the vibes were bad last week, they're going to be worse this week, and I would be surprised if we didn't have more ugly losses in our future.  So I wouldn't bet money on him surviving Black Monday. So it goes.

I thought Caleb Williams looked bad but not disastrously bad.  C-/D+ territory.    I'd like for him to miss fewer throws, but he wasn't *as* bad as his stat line looks.    I didn't love the look on his face in the second half.  He looked a bit defeated and ready to move on from the game, not that I can blame him.  And he limped off the field on the final play. JFC.

The defense without Sweat is not a good defense.

Pending Wright's injury, our tackles next week may be Borom/that dude we elevated from the practice squad with a first backup of ... someone else from the practice squad? Someone off the street?

If we don't get healthy fast, the Lions are going to drop 100 on us

If Caleb got hurt and has to go on IR because one of those last two plays, you do fire Eberflus and I think for the first time ever the Bears fire a coach midseason

You know what's funny? I'm not sure Kyler Murray had a better day than Williams did. He just didn't need to.

I’m not sure funny is the word I’d use.

My take on Caleb after 8 games is that I see him do things that I’ve never seen a Bears QB do before or at least rarely. He seems to have the between the ears component that other QBs have lacked and can read a defense and make adjustments at the line. He mostly keeps his eyes downfield even when scrambling and can make quick decisions that make plays happen out of nowhere.

But his accuracy, particularly his deep ball accuracy, has been super alarming even if I believe it’s something he can fix. And today he had that same deer in headlights look that I’ve seen Justin and Mitch have when they look utterly defeated and have lost their confidence due to being pressured so frequently and that’s definitely scary.

I tend to believe that good QB prospects can be ruined by poor development, though there are probably some QBs that are good enough to overcome that. I’m not sure which camp Caleb is in but it really doesn’t look like this offense is maximizing his strengths so that’s a bad sign.

I still think he ultimately projects to be a Pro Bowl QB, but I can’t discount him being ruined by poor coaching and ending up in the Bears QB graveyard.

Agree with every word.

Shane Waldron has been perfectly competent, if not even good as an OC. He took Geno Smith from a laughable bust to a probowl QB. Of course he can take the best QB prospect of the last 5 years to success.......but Bears.

well I don’t think poles will be buying at the deadline but maybe we should be looking to sell. can we get anything for allen and herbert?

Allen looks washed up and will cost a team over $10 million

Can’t help but laugh

edit: correction, actually the longest since at least the merger in 1970

i bet if you asked most people who follow the nfl enough to know about the waldron/geno thing they would guess that waldron's first year as seattle OC was geno's first year with them.

but he basically sat for a year behind russ with brian schottenheimer as OC, then sat most of another year (started 3 games and wasn't really good) behind russ with waldron as OC and THEN had his comeback player of the year the following season. it's not like he was on the fringes of an NFL roster and waldron had him coming out gangbusters the very next season

I have minimal issues with the OC.  If you wanna blame Eberflus for late defensive collapses and the locker room looking like it's slipping away, sure.

But the primary reason the offense can't score points some weeks is the inconsistent play of our rookie QB.  And the second reason is that our offensive line is completely blasted by injuries.  We had our sixth option at tackle on the field by the end of the game

I'm not "blaming" the OC per se. But I do think some of this is on him. If you know you are on your 5th OT to start this game, and your QB is a rookie that is getting rattled, and you have a bunch of weapons at your disposal.....at some point, it's a failure on your part to not adapt to protect all these things and put up more than 9 points against like the 28th best defense. Probably wouldn't have been enough today, but this hasn't been a 1 week problem.

And the bigger picture issue is that he hasn't shown enough to make anyone believe he'll be the one that can turn things around when the rookie QB improves and the OL hopefully has reinforcements.

I mean, the things they're getting criticized for is the exact things they did to try to adapt.  Running with Swift a lot on early downs to keep ahead of the chains, leaving TEs to block a lot.

This isn’t his first miserably failed game plan this season

I have zero faith in fans' ability to tell the difference between players getting outplayed and a failed game plan.

The game plan didn't tell Allen and Moore to develop dropsies, it didn't tell Caleb Williams to be scared to throw one on ones outside of the red zone or to spray throws, it didn't tell the offensive line to not block anyone.

the evidentiary burden is on the offensive coordinator to demonstrate they are someone who can give you an edge in scheme and qb development, not just be in the meaty part of the bell curve
