The way the podcast made it seem was more along the lines that the Cubs are very open to improving any way they can. It wasn't so much as "the Cubs signed Boyd, so they're cool in the rotation" but framed much more in the sense of "The Cubs know they have to be better and while SP is a way they can improve, they're open to all avenues"

I don’t know if you are directly quoting or paraphrasing. But the clearly are not open to all avenues

I assume this part is contingent on the Soto domino falling somewhere besides the Bronx, but sounds like we'll know that in the next few days anyways.

Blue Jays could also be interested.

Hard pill to swallow knowing that the team was focused 110% on TOR pitching and signing Boyd has satisfied the palette in a way.

What exactly are we trying to improve here?

I was thinking about it and the situation isn't any any different than last year.  We have Imanaga and they seemed to want to keep a slot open for Wicks/Brown/Assad and longterm Horton but they needed another SP so they went with Hendricks.

Boyd replaces Hendricks here, leaves a spot for one of the young guys plus injuries always happen.  Unfortunately doesn't move the needle much but they do have some money left to spend to stack some upgrades at pen, catcher etc

According to Levine  Chafin / Yates / Carson Kelly and Danny Jansen on Cubs radar .

First time I have heard Chafin. At least he is left handed.

If the Cubs do trade Bellinger,  are we looking at Suzuki in RF and getting another bat for DH or a bridge in RF until Caissie is ready ?

Does Alcantara get an opportunity ?

Soto has multiple 600 mil offers being reported,  and I doubt the cubs get into that bidding war.

Hard to say on the former.  They would have payroll room to add a bat.

Per Soto, I don't believe any reports with a Boras negotiation, he could be dropping that to journalists to drive up bidding.

The probabiliy that our team is in good position to win every game. It possibly raised the floor a little.

He does have upside if he has a season where his walks are on the low/average side.  Otherwise he's pretty average.  Lefties hit him better the last few seasons so a bit strange.

With Yates looks like they're bargain-hunting again instead of paying for top talent.  But i assume they'll check in on everyone interesting regardless.  This smells like the Neris deal.

Are you trying to win an award for the most Tim McCarver (captain obvious) comment of all time with this comment? What is even the point of mentionjng this now. The Soto ship sailed long ago. You “DOUBT” they get in a bidding war? The white Sox have a better chance of winning the WS next year than the chances of the Cubs getting into a bidding war for Soto.

Yates has over 30 saves last year with a 1.17 ERA. He was amazing. He is older. But if they get him it is hardly bargain shopping.

Yates is one of the top available RP on the market. Not sure how that is bargain hunting. They are simply using his age to limit the contract years.

If the Cubs were bargain hunting the names would be something like Hoby Milner and Danny Coulombe.

Has to be Bellinger. Suzucki makes no sense at all.

If it's Suzuki, then short of Soto being a Cub, I'm just out on this horsefeathers team.

Why would you trade Suzuki? He was number 16 in wRC+ last year and we all know this team desperately needs guys that can create runs. That would be an insanely dumb move. It is Hoyer though.

It has to be Bellinger only.

Catching options running thin quickly.

Seriously! WTF!!!! That was a very reasonable deal. Are we really going with that bum we signed from the Angels as a back up catcher. Why is this happening? Why does it seem they are going to trim the budget more than to just a bit below the LT line. I don’t understand it. Between talks of moving Nico and Bellinger and now even Suzuki mentioned, WTF!!!!!

Hopefully this isnt a situation where they have to make a trade before a signing . I dont think Kelly will be there on the market too much lo longer . Its basically down to him in terms of catching options

If they dont get Kelly , pretty good chance Thais will be the back up
