Extremely reactive, hyperbolic post: Caleb Williams has surpassed Justin Fields in 5 weeks of play

He already has more 300 yard passing games as a bear than Fields did

Pretending that fields had something to do with starting 3-0 is going to cause the Steelers to give those wins right back

So happy that my predictions came true, even if they were pretty easy predictions. A) was the Bears put up 30+ and B) Caleb has his coming out party. C) was that the Panthers might burn the defense for a play, but that they should probably control the game also came true, although it ended up being Chuba rather than one of Mingo or Leggette.

I was livid with that first Bears series. The Bears have to be easily the worst team in the league on the first series of downs. Has their been a game where they didn't go 3 and out on the first series? Reading through this thread, I saw everyone else posting the same level of anger, so I'm glad it isn't just me.

Everything was roses in that game. But, it was obviously a team with a lot of issues. What I'm hoping is that confidence is built for both Caleb and the OLine and possibly a little more respect from opposing defenses. That graphic earlier in this thread that showed Caleb was 6-6 on pass plays featuring a blitz is great news.

The Bears offense appeared to be coasting from about halfway through the 3rd quarter. They still passed it more than I thought they would, but if this game was closer I think Caleb would have been closer to 400 yards passing. I'm glad they continued running him out there to get his reps in.

Who is starting when Russ gets back?

A miracle Fields is up after that hit.

Yes, was glad to see him get up and, the flag, still don't understand why the NFL has let Fields be the recipient of so many flag-free cheap shots.

Fields is turning back into Fields.  I saw the same Bears QB from last year basically.  It’s worth noting Dallas has key injuries on defense so it’s not like he had Parsons to deal with.  I wish him good things but he doesn’t look any different / better to me right now.

It’s funny how bad the Bears are in the first series of the game, which are the scripted plays from the OC. It was like the thing Getsy truly excelled at, and the ‘23 Bears were tremendous at marching down the field to score to start a game off (usually followed by turning into a pumpkin for the rest of the game). Can we somehow just rent Getsy for the first 15 plays every game?

Also, I suspect, and want, to see Davis permanently benched from here on out. Pryor has been more than adequate filling in, and the team is clearly better with this personnel and a gap blocking scheme. I’m not mad at Waldron for instituting his scheme and realizing it wasn’t work, kudos to him for adapting and rolling with what works

If the Bears can combine the opportunistic defense of Week 1, with the efficiency and run game of Week 4, and the big pass play explosion of Week 3....we can finally see the full potential of this team.

Wow, this happened! And they actually still left points on the board. Clipping call took away 4 points. A botched 4th and short again and a DJ Moore drop late took away at least 3 points as well. A missed PAT, a missed 2pt conversion. The Bears were legitimately close to putting up a 50 burger. This is the way you beat teams like the Panthers.

Edit: I guess the run game didn't have the efficiency. But to be fair, they had 6 plays where they needed and tried to get 2 yards or less. And typically, if you only try to get 1-2 yards, you will only get 1 or 2 yards at most (and obviously can only get 1-2 at the 1-2 yard line).

If you take out those plays 6 carries for 3 yards and the 3 kneeldowns from Bagent, That takes them to 29 carries for 129, over 4 ypc, though that does include Caleb's yards.

Fun fact, this was actually the Bears 8th straight home win dating back to last season, the longest active home winning streak in the NFL.

This is incredible to me.  Incredible in a good way.

Vilma was falling all over himself about Bryce Young eventually being good. Don't know about that point. I understand NFL linemen are monsters and all, Young still looks tiny out there, even smaller than Kyler Murray. Murray, at least, appears strong and thick. Young may have all the other tools however, he's never going to overcome the physical barrier.

What happened on the drive where Williams got to the goal line but didn’t convert TD in the third? SiriusXM signal went out for about 5 minutes then

That's the one where Williams escaped the pocket with some magic and scrambled around, darting in and out of danger for about 10 seconds, before finally crossing the endzone and collapsing from exhaustion, only to be called back for a cheap clipping penalty on Kramer.

Actually had the TD on a QB scramble, but called back for a clipping penalty on Kramer for 15 yards. Didn't connect on two passes from the 15 and then kicked the FG.

The Bryce Young thing should have people in the NFL and fans really taking a long look at themselves for falling for hype over a guy who clearly, physically, cannot play NFL football. It's easy to blame the Panthers for the disastrous trade and pick, but at the time it wasn't seen as that ludicrous to trade up for him, which itself should cause some real introspection by draft analysts.

There are plenty of busts in the NFL, and QB is almost certainly the hardest position to evaluate and project, but people who really should have known better should have been honest with themselves publicly. Dude can't play. He probably should have been a day 2 pick. What the hell?

I'll give Poles credit for recognizing Young would have problems, if I recall, he did his due diligence with scouting, etc.  However, there was never a chance the Bears were going to trade Fields and draft Young.

Everyone's talking about the play where Shelton is heard yelling at Williams "we got effing fire, man!" and Williams says "I know."

So what that means is this.

"fire" is a play where the defense brings a DB blitz and runs a 3-deep zone behind it.  The nickelback on the weak side was creeping up to get into blitz position, that's what caused Shelton to yell the warning.

The blitz came, Williams ball fakes but takes no drop at all and *immediately* shoots it off to Odunze on a quick outside route, wide open in a zone that only has 3 underneath.  The blitzer was unblocked and would have destroyed Williams if he had taken a full drop or hitched in any way, but the ball was out so fast he was a non-entity.

This is why the NFL is a QB league. This is what we've been begging to see for years.  This is why "but there was an unblocked blitzer" is never an excuse for an NFL QB to not get the ball out.

I am irrationally annoyed that the first TD to Moore is officially a 19-yard DOT and will not count on Williams' 20+ stats that everyone has been citing. It sure looked like 20 to me.

We'd be scraping Fields' corpse off the field if he was still here. But yeah, it's a nice change and it's even changed from Week 2 down in Houston. Of course, Houston not only had unblocked blitzers, they also had unblocked guys on the front 4, so I'm good with some excuses there, especially considering Caleb's 2nd game and all
