Do you know if Neeley is a strikeout type of pitcher or a pitch to contact?

He's had a 37%+ K rate all through the minors, until AAA. Only pitched 10.2 innings in AAA so far, but the K rate has dipped 10%.

Pipeline has both prospect in the yankees top 30. They gave Neely's slider a 70 grade and his numbers look good this year. Cowles is raking this year and looks like he could be an interesting super sub. It's not the sexiest return but looks like we got good value in guys that could see the majors soon.

From his stats, obviously strictly relief his entire career

Agree on the stats here, but also these two were unranked by FG back in December and 22nd and 29th on the MLB list that came out midseason. Jed usually does pretty good here, but was hoping for a little more from what is probably our best reliever to be traded.

The lists more or less are pretty meaningless this far into the year. Midseason lists are kind of iffy at best as well. We'll see a more accurate representation at the end of year lists when the writers actually get all the scout feed back.

Somehow just realized Leiter has two more years of control left? Everyone else seems to be fine with this, so whatever, but seems dumb to me.

He'll be 34 opening day next year and they got a guy who has the potential to replace him pretty much immediately as well as a guy who is showing a pretty legit shot at being a utility guy.

I feel like Bellinger is still a possibility for getting traded, he was activated yesterday but didn't play. He might be a last minute deal for a team

I'm slightly underwhelmed, or at least I'm underwhelmed by the fit.  I'm intrigued by the possibility Cowles has turned himself into a potential starting MIF, but that doesn't help short term the way that Leiter does.  Neely seems like a decent relief prospect to backfill the 40 man when offseason shuffling happens.

With each new INF prospect we get we are closer and closer to the ultimate goal of dumping Madrigal

51k in 31 IP this year.

Yeah but 24 y/o in AA.  Only 10 IP in AAA so far this year but K #'s have been pedestrian so far.  But we'll see.

K% for Cowles has also been poor in his minors career besides this year.  Tools matter for these guys, not just stats.

Him and Mastrobuoni hopefully never have another plate appearance for the cubs ever again

Cubs might be weaker in the pen for 2025 with this.  But Leiter is 33 so they may have wanted to sell high before he might start to age regress.

With Leiter and Bigge gone to trade and Smyly to FA, it does mean they'll probably have to go grab someone in FA.

That's the biggest reason I don't have an issue with this.  He's a guy who's one appearance away from the trash heap because he's so reliant on the feel for that splitter and he's already 33.  Hopefully they turn the arm into a guy who can contribute regularly.

At least they have experience in that department.

Pen arms are always a risk. I have no issue with letting Lieter go. IMO whoever they replace him with has just as good a chance as being solid as Lieter does next year. Trade Lieter while people are interested. Works for me.

He's come back from losing his feel on the splitter multiple times and done it quickly enough that his overall performance has been more than solid, and he's bringing in new pitches that have been effective and reduce his reliance on the splitter. 33 isn't old, but he's not relying on 98 mph to be effective. Just seems dumb to pull the trigger for....this package.

I'm not worried about next year's pen at the moment. Anything can happen in the offseason and we have several interesting upper minors prospects. Get what you can for the Leiters and Smylys and take a deal if someone wows you for someone else.

I'm thinking MLJr was picked up off the trash heap 2 years running. Anybody could've signed him for circus peanuts and now cubs actually got 2 live bodies, with one having the opportunity to be a replacement in the bullpen. Worth it to me.

Probably unpopular opinion but I like Bellinger in CF for the Cubs next year.  He did fine offensively for us this year even while his HR stroke was clearly not in a groove yet.  I don't think he's a different player than he was in March so if they keep him i'm fine with it.  He's a little expensive but a CF who can hit and do everything well isn't easy to find.
