if you’re not gonna ph bellinger for Canario, don’t bunt with amaya. pretty simple. playing for extra innings when you have zero good relievers left is just stupid.

One at-bat for Gomes or Belli there isn't throwing off their Game 2 start. Fuucking ridiculous

Exactly,  would of preferred Gomes over Canario there to get that runner home from 3B.

Happ is hurt, so your options are lefties(Bellinger, Busch) against Scott or Gomes.  Giving guys a full game without playing in a DH probably is part of it too.

I think I would rather let either lefty bat there than a guy who is only up with the club due to injury and who has contact issues.

This is now the 9th game the Cubs have lost while leading in the 8th inning over their last 48 games

(yes I’m going to keep doing this until the Cubs stop losing games they are leading in the 8th inning or later)

And this doesn’t include the game where we gave up 6 runs to the Rockies in the 8th to tie it only to win. This team cannot hold leads late

they tied a major league record with 5 losses with an 8+ inning lead in September and then came out and did it 4 more times in the first month of 2024, with still quite a few games left to tie or set the new record

Brutal way to lose a game. Can we shoot Jed out of a cannon?

We can’t afford the cannon 🤣 But in reality, jed is probably closer to another extension than dismissal. As sick as that makes me.

Yep, it was absolutely the old "I promised you the whole game off" thing, which I can not horsefeathers stand

Also that Scott turns all LHH into Canario, and Gomes has been overpowered by velocity several times in the young season already.  I'm the driver of the 'Canario is not special' bandwagon, but there isn't a good option to avoid a K in that situation.  Sometimes the batting order is in the wrong spot and the other guy is very good.

Which is why I’m not sure hiring a new manger as the primary way of stopping that was the best idea.

pretty ****** job from the guy that is supposed to specialize in winning one run games.

Yes. I’m going to give Counsell a lot of leeway, but that was a spot for Gomes to bat.

Now the pressure is on to win tonight with Hendricks going on Sunday. Not going to tank the season or anything but really don’t want to lose a series to a team that came in 4-15

Rossy has to be cracking up watching this horsefeathers

Too bad the beat writers don't ask any tough questions to the Cubs. Counsell should be getting grilled for this, but he won't

Yes there are 2 decisions here, the first being whether to bunt with Amaya. Ok you chose to bunt with him and he did a great job getting it down.  But it makes no sense to me to sacrifice an out only to put up a guy with massive contact issues to take the biggest AB of the game. And makes even less sense that he was swinging to hit the ball onto Sheffield.

I know TT will probsbly have all these rebuttals to make me look stupid but on the surface that’s really questionable to me

The mistake was letting Canario hit, everyone in the Universe, except for Counsell, knew he was not going to put the ball in play.  Have to go Bellinger or Busch for that at bat.

I’m more on Adbert for this one. But I see your point. I like Craig. But again, he’s had good pitchers that have made him better than he is in tight games.

why? he got fired and the cubs are 12-8

Because Jed hinted that the finish to the season last year with all the late blown games was part of his evaluation and he went out of his way to fire Ross to hire someone who was supposed to help us win 1 run games and instead the new guy is blowing games at an even higher frequency he was last September.

I don’t typically put a lot of weight on manager impact, but it’s gotta be a little humorous to him

The only justification I can think of for having Amaya bunt in that spot is to make sure the reasonable worst case scenario is Nico gets a 2 out AB. Maybe put pressure on the guy to not put chase pitches into the dirt. I don't know, I just know I didn't like it in the moment so this isn't second guessing.

I don't have an issue with Amaya swinging away, mostly because I think trusting him to get the bunt down is a significant risk.  But he made a great play, and set up only needing a fly ball to tie and a single to win.

As for pinch hitting for Canario, you aren't making yourself better by putting a LHH in there, even Bellinger.  Scott not only K's them at a Canario-esque rate, but they have a much lower batting average when you need a hit.  If you want to pinch hit Gomes I wouldn't have been upset with that either, but I suspect Gomes v. 95+ velo has a pretty shocking K rate too(I can't see where to pull that up to confirm), so it's more a coin flip for me and not a decision I'm gonna lose any sleep over.

More generally, not all bad things that happen are avoidable failures.  The other team has talented players and sometimes the right decision doesn't work out.
