Ex Bears GMs Phil Emery and Ryan Pace try and match wits with future Ex-Bears GM Ryan Poles as the Atlanta Falcons come to Chicago on New Years Eve.  Bears are 3 point favorites. Fields is overdue for an actually big day, and running out of opportunities to do it. A whole bunch of mediocrity has pretty much cemented his future, or lackthereof as it pertains to the Bears.

There’s still a shred of a chance to get their asses kicked in a playoff game, but don’t ask me how.

Are you sure? I didn’t do the math myself but saw someone on Twitter say the Seahawks win yesterday eliminated the Bears

edit: disregard were somehow still alive and I’m sick so I’m gonna go find that scenario now

Not sure if the most efficient scenario but

Win out+

Week 17

Vikings, Steelers, Giants win

Week 18

Falcons, Eagles, Cardinals, 49ers win

Thanks.  ESPNs stupid playoff machine is down right now for some reason.

On the one hand, it would be nice to finish the season respectably, finish 8-9 and beat the packers. On the other hand, I bet the Bears would keep Eberflus another year if they do that.

so, tough call

Who's to say they aren't keeping Flus no matter what?

For my sanity I'll just root for wins.  Warren either knows what he's doing or he doesn't, the wins or losses don't matter towards that.

I've been cheering for Bears wins all season, but since mid-year I have been okay with the losses, too.

I wouldn’t say I’ve been okay with them but definitely more or less accepting fate when it comes to their shortcomings.

I'm thinking they do keep him. They just paid the last HC to not coach the team, and I don't think that's ownerships favorite thing to do. The defense has been pretty solid and one more offseason of adds could make this a powerhouse defense once again. They probably start over on the offensive side of the ball, and I would think this draft could convince some respected OC's to want to be here now that the rebuild is closer to complete.

For me, it's less then 25% chance of Flus getting fired. As frustrating as Flus can be, the defense showing life and the Bears doubling the wins from 3 to 6+ has bought Flus another season, imo. Is it possible the Bears could "David Ross" Matt Eberflus if the right coach became available, sure, but I don't think it's likely.

Poles/Flus, imo, will be back in 2024.

There's 2 thing the Bears can absolutely NOT do.

1. Keep Justin Fields and give him a new coach/offense

2. Keep Eberflus and give him a new/rookie QB

If either of these things happen, I lose all faith in Poles and Warren. That's same ol Bears type horsefeathers.

What about a variation of 2 where they keep flus but get a new oc to handle the young QB?

I believe there's a strong chance of this outcome, certainly not the best of the choices.  However, it's far better than keeping Fields and going with a new coaching staff.

I didn't miss any scenarios. That's not 1 of the 2 scenarios I would find acceptable. Flus hasn't shown he's good enough to warrant the chance to get his future tied to another QB period, even if he's not the guy that directly coaches the QB.

I kind of wish there were a way to keep Flus on as DC, but hire someone new as HC.  I'm simultaneously impressed and disgusted as the fact that Flus' chosen DC got the boot early in the season, but the Bears' young defensive players have continued to grow and develop to the point where the team has a playoff-caliber defense from a talent and production standpoint.  On the one hand, it's impressive to see how Flus managed to save what could have been an abject disaster, but it's also disgusting that this all stemmed from Flus' inability to hire competent and qualified people who aren't apparent HR nightmares.

I have zero faith in Flus' managerial skills and abilities, but he clearly is a high quality coordinator who got over-promoted.

Eh. The team is still 21st in scoring defense. They are 12th overall, but they are still 25th in passing D (to go with 1st against the run). And they've still blown leads by falling apart late, recently. Flus is a good DC. But he's not special enough to make me feel like you would be hurting by moving on from him. This is still a defense that has used 2nd round picks on Stevenson, Brisker, Gordon, Dexter, and Sweat. They have an elite (or near elite) CB in Johnson. They have 125M worth of off ball LBs. There's a decent amount of talent on this defense to sustain this uptick in performance over the last 6 weeks.

We are keeping eberflus and getting a new QB.  We aren't firing him when they've done exactly what they intended to do: tank to reset expectations then show "improvement" over that new absurdly low baseline

Yeah. the defense becoming surprisingly decent doesn’t mean much to me especially since it’s an antiquated system regularly exploited by competent QBs. If this was a defense that routinely shut down top offenses, than by all means you consider keeping him on. But he’s horrible in game and his defense isn’t that good.

make the clean break and hire the best offensive coach for your draft pick. Don’t keep him around only to replace him next year when the QB gets a whole new staff. Be done with this nonsense of holding on to portions of a coaching staff with lane duck qbs.

So it is either run it back with Flus/Getsy and Fields, or clean house? But if getting rid of Getsy means cleaning house, I'm fine with it, as long as Fields doesn't take off with another team.

If the FO (Poles/Warren) didn't see the deficiencies of this coaching staff in blowing 3 games they had a greater than 90% win probability late in the 4th quarter in, then I think we're in a for a really long wait until this team is good again.  Those 3 games alone should cost any coach their job when they happen in a single season regardless of what else they accomplish, which in this case is jack horsefeathers.

One thing to remember is that Poles invested heavily in defense to this point. So at least he can pick those players, probably a much easier job. I think it's going to be a lot to ask of this ownership to get rid of Eberfuls. I think it's much more likely that they draft a QB and keep Fields and try to find a way to make it work.

Wouldn't be too worried Fields taking off, he may improve a little with an OC who's going to maximize putting him in a position to succeed.  The same problems will still hold him back, holding onto the ball too long, fumbling, etc.
