Would it not make more sense to fire Flus this off-season and bring in a new coach, if the plan is to draft a QB?

That would be what a well-run organization would do, yes.  But this is the Bears we're talking about here.

Two responses:

1) What evidence do we have that Eberflus is a lame-duck coach in 2024?

2) Williams is a prospect caliber that everyone would want. It's not the same thing as picking a second-tier QB prospect and then finding out he's not the right type of second-tier QB prospect for your new coach.

I thought he signed a 3 year deal not a 4 year deal. My bad. The fact that there was doubt he would return earlier in the year, tells me, that at the very least his sit will be warm in 2024.

As for Williams, I've made it perfectly clear on other boards, I am not high on Williams at all. The fumbles and the size gives me pause. But I'll probably will be wrong, which would not be the first time or the last. I'm trying to get behind picking Williams but damn, passing on Marvin Harrison, Jr to would be passing on Randy Moss again. I much rather trade down than take Caleb Williams.

Umm, there was a QB in the Randy Moss draft too that I think was probably the right call at 1.01Ao-1.1

If I remember correctly that was a Peyton Manning .v. Ryan Leaf debate as to who would go #1. I know the Colts have said, it was always going to be Manning but the public did not know that at the time. Hindsight says the Colts made the right decision.

I don't think comparing Caleb Williams to Peyton Manning is fair to Caleb. Peyton was as polished of a QB as there ever was entering draft, Caleb needs some polishing up and I don't trust the Bears to do that properly.

If the Bears end up drafting Williams, I'll root for him to succeed but I think I rather follow the 49ers playbook and build up the roster and find a plug and play guy.

Williams isn't as good as Manning, but the parallels are funny. Manning was the consensus no. 1 pick by a wide margin going into his senior season, but prospect fatigue set in and people started to nitpick things like his personality and his college team's ability to win big games.
