It's hard to imagine a more disastrous outcome from that trade. Gave up a top 2nd rounder, got fewer than 20 catches over the course of roughly a season, is a toxic presence, and then traded for something less than a 6th round pick.

Not great, Ryan!

He did help them reach the minimum payroll threshold

You can get more for the #1 pick than you can get for Fields. So I'd keep Fields and trade that #1 for an absolute haul.

I mean yeah, but that's not the goal. The goal is to have the best QB. If they feel Caleb Williams is the better QB, then it doesn't matter that they can get more for him.

Then you throw in you have to pick up a 23M option on Fields this offseason and potentially 50M/year long-term, while you get Williams cheaper for 4 years.

So the Bears swapped their high 7th round pick for a low 6th round pick.  How much is a 5-10 spot move in the 6th/7th round actually worth?  Not nothing, but pretty close to it.

It's 2025 picks

It's a 2025 pick swap so there's still a possibility the gap is wider than that..but yeah.  Teams were waiting for the Bears to cut him from what I've read so getting anything for him is probably a positive.

Edit:  Whoops this was already pointed out

Which is why I am hoping the Bears end up with picks 2 (via Carolina) and 7/8/9. Take the Caleb Williams decision out of Poles hands.

Bears next 5 games:

Vikings

Raiders

@Chargers

@Saints

Panthers

3-2 is possible, and a 4-6 overall record. Damn that Bronco game stings.

Vikings game could be fun, if the current version of Fields shows up could be a game decided by whomever has the ball last.

Pause this video at the 1.8 seconds after the snap mark.

All of his receivers have defenders on them.  The interior offensive line is getting beat and fields is going to be hit in about half a second.

If he takes a sack or scrambles, people say "what can he do? No one was open and there was no time."

Good NFL qb play beats both coverage and pressure

Free this week

So easy to see all the tools are there in spades. Like Kyle says, he hesitates a lot. He has a long load and his footwork is sloppy. But man he's on the verge of being a special passer. It could just come with further comfort. He left a lot of plays on the field. Even the plays where his anticipation was passable, they could have been even better. He has to trust his receivers will make the right breaks.

Any concern that once again Fields completely avoids the middle of the field?  I don't know what the numbes are but it seems like 90% of his passes are outside the hashmarks and a decent number of his INTs are over the middle.  Here is last night's chart

There's still plenty to nitpick and criticize.  Not all his decisions or throws were perfect.  He still has a long, slow release and drop.

But you can work around flaws.  You can't work around "refuses to pull the trigger on open receivers."

Fields has to average 1.58 passing TDs a game for the rest of the season to become the first Bears QB to have 30 passing TDs in one year.

As strange as this sounds, he currently has the 42nd most passing TDs in a season in Bears history with 11.

I'll say this: If the O-line plays like this consistently and you continue to get HOF caliber play from Moore, Fields will be fine.

I didn't think the line was that much better last night, especially in pass protection.

Jenkins consistently playing equals an uptick in line play, on some of the analysis he's mauling people, including guys like Chase Young.  Saw Wright stuff either Payne or Allen a few times, love it.

I've paid so little attention to this team that I didn't even know they played last night

I didn't realize they were playing Thursday and I figured it was going to be a fitting end to an already bummer of a workday.  So, it wound up being a nice surprise.

Man QBR really hates Fields. Even after the last two games he's 26th at 44.9. His 95.4 RTG has him up to 14th.

I'm guessing more a function of how bad his first 3 weeks were, particularly the KC game.  His QBR last week was 69.1 and this week 77.1.   Over a full season, those numbers would be 6th and 3rd in the league respectively.

Edit: His first 3 weeks were 21.6, 24.0 and 17.2 which are all worse than Bryce Young's season average.
