so why have the cubs been so quiet? 700m makes me think we never had a shot.

Probably less because of the Fubs and more everyone else.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes now for the flurry of moves to begin . Yamamoto could still hold the pitching market up

I'd expect position players to start flying off the board within 48 hours.  Pitchers might hold off another week or two for Yamamoto

I'm very interested to see how much is deferred and what the CBT tax hit is on an annual basis.  You can rightfully argue that the Cubs were right to not match or exceed $700m offer (and who knows maybe they did but he just chose the Dodgers lol), but if its only like a $30m annual cap hit can you really say "the Cubs wouldnt have been able to compete with that contract on the books?".  Then it becomes a matter of the Cubs simply not wanting to spend all that money on a baseball player even if laid out over 20+ years.  Which again, I'm not necessarily criticizing the Cubs for, just pointing it out.

  • Outshined_One changed the title to Ohtani to Dodgers for an ungodly amount of money

I am very interested to see what the details are on the deferrals. Honestly, it might bring the real value of this contract down into the $550-600M range.

At the least I'd expect LAD is out on Yamamoto now.

The two new York teams always seemed the biggest threat for Yamamoto. Unless the giants offer 300 mil

Man, these two are huge losers. Linking them after today should result in a forum ban.

Dave Roberts literally leaked during a live interview 😂. People still making this out to be something that it wasn't

"i'm responsible for a 700 million dollar decision" is quite the double down

I'm going to need a source on the Dodgers being able to cheat the CBT. The CBA is pretty ironclad on this.

I’m not even mad we didn’t get him after seeing what he got. We wouldn’t spend another penny for the next 23 years if we gave him that much

Since Bertz mentioned it I've done a little searching and seen a few mentions of the NPV calculation, so it could be the case. That said, it has to be a ton of money deferred for very, very long time to make a difference greater than, say, 5-8 million.

Right? Why would you want to even imply to a fan base that you (in part) ruined this acquisition? Once he takes a breathe he’s gonna wish he hadn’t tweeted that.

Not mad at all at 700 mil, I love ohtani but can't justify that

They're not paying for just baseball skills, but revenue he'll bring into the team.  But that's a lot of money lol

I think we’re unlikely to outbid the New York teams on Yamamoto. As someone else mentioned, could also see the losing teams here get desperate for Bellinger. So this offseason just got tougher. The free agent market kinda plummets in quality a bit after the headliners.

I really hope we can get a good trade none of us see coming.

This is the Roster Resource guy for Fangraphs

So even outrageous deferrals only pull the AAV down by 10ish percent?
