I remember the first time that call was broadcast on the baseball America website via RealAudio player

Wasn't that the Mark Pawelek draft?  I have a distinct memory of tuning in and hearing Tommy LaSorda rip on the Angels for changing their names.

I think I read early in this thread that Levis had leaked that he was going to be the first pick in the draft, and now he's sitting all alone in the draft room on day 2. How embarrassing. At least until he actually gets drafted, I suppose.

Why would he leak that? Because he thought it was true or because he thought it would somehow raise his profile?

Never understood the Levis hype. He seemed like a day 2 or even day 3 pick to me. Not saying he can’t turn into a decent or even good QB but seemed like the amount of development he needs gives him a higher bust rate than most 1st round QBs

He actually leaked that he would be the first pick on Friday night.

He was probably a 1st rounder but then this happened

That on top of pushing it later and later. Most other leagues have the draft just a few weeks after the season ends. The NFL milks everything to death (they'll milk the schedule reveal next).

You know its bad when the sports radio guys are saying "thank god this draft is finally here so we can stop talking about it)

With the caveat that they could easily do it shortly after the season ends, part of the reason they have that ability is the NFL season is shorter than the other ones. Regular season and playoffs only run from Sept to Feb. compare that to Oct to June for the NBA and the NHL. If those sports held the draft 2 1/2 month after the season ended they’d be in training camp.

It's so horsefeathering stupid how ponderous the NFL draft has become. I know it's to wring out every last quarter, but they used to do the entire draft on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday Morning.

It's one extra day.  And it actually takes less time because the first round used to have 15 minutes between picks.  It used to be that Saturday was 10-12 straight hours of picks and then several more hours on Sunday.

To be clear, Levis never said anything as far as we know. BigbadB is referring to a post I made on page 2 where his odds to go #1 had suddenly spiked (went from 50/1 to 4/1 or something overnight) because some guy on Reddit claimed Levis was telling his people Carolina was taking him first.

They haven't pushed the draft later.  The draft has been in the second half of April (and occasionally in early May) since the 70's.  And since the Super Bowl has moved back by a couple of weeks, it's actually closer to the Super Bowl than it was before.

Feel like this draft is lining up to have QBs falling. Never got the hype for these guys. Poles was right to trade when he did.

I was right, sort of. All that talk of 4 in the top ten was crazy. It happens every year that they hype up the lower guys into the top group. I thought two of them could have dropped, but 1 dropping entirely out of the 1st is good enough for me.

lol, I saw a video on Twitter of Levis putting mayonnaise in his coffee and drinking it. That would be enough to for me to scratch him off my draft board.

That can't be real, who the horsefeathers puts mayonnaise in coffee?

I should have spoilered it. This is a family board.

Edit: Also, slightly worried Derwood would get after me.

The jump cut makes me think he's not actually drinking the mayo

It's very likely some kind of a fake, but it's funny on a number of levels.

Does anyone want to take a guess at what the Lions were thinking with their 1st pick because on the face of it, it makes no sense? It's not a position of need, nor a pick based on value.

Apparently the Lions are still gonna Lion, even after they win a bunch of games after the season is already over.

They clearly don't like D'Andre Swift. I'm guessing he gets traded.
