Twins out of nowhere

3 yrs, $105M with an opt out after 2. Guess he didn’t get a long term deal he liked. Surprised he couldn’t get a long term deal with an opt out after 3.

there is conspiracy theories that his prior representation would get a cut of this contract, and the next one would be all Boras

Cubs really gonna run a $140m payroll out there aren’t they?

That he didn’t come here is whatever. But to not be able

to do better than 3/$105 from the small market twins is pathetic. Top 10 position player in baseball arguably and those poor broke Cubs couldn’t handle a fiscally smart contract like that.

Some of this info isn’t exact because some sites have opening day payroll, some calculate with the changes throughout the year but since Theo Epstein was hired in 2012 the Cubs have operated on average the 11th largest payroll in the league. Yeesh

I don’t really get why *no one* else managed to drive that offer higher. Are teams really spooked by the injury history? No interest in the possibility of a 1 year player(with multi year downside in case of disaster) given how random single seasons are? I typically roll my eyes at conspiratorial stuff like that agent theory, but Correa being fixated on a 1 year opt out being the thing that prolonged his market makes as much sense as his market’s behavior.

Bizarre. I would have bet he'd get at least 6 or 7 years with the opt outs.

I am one of those who is a little spooked by his 2018-20, and I wouldn't have been thrilled by giving him 300MM+, but this I would have done.

But I'm shocked he couldn't get a better guarantee, and think this was his best shot at a huge contract. This is really betting huge on himself over the next year or two, and I'd personally be surprised if he plays this into a bigger contract.

Yeah my guess is because of the injury history his options topped out at $200-something, and he knew if he had back to back healthy seasons he'd clear that $300M bar easily. The weird things to me are A) Why wouldn't the Astros take this deal and B) If Correa couldn't get there how did Seager do so easily?

Of the scenarios where we don't just sign him ourselves, this works out about as well as possible for us. He's now either on the market for us next year, when the roster around him would be much more fitting, or he gets hurt again and shows that he in fact wasn't worth the risk of a long term deal.

The Cubs a shittily owned and ran baseball team. But the fact he agreed to such a contract suggests collusion. Why would Correra care which agent group gets a cut? Why would he listen to Boras and settle for something like this? If the Baltimore rumor was true, one would think he signing there.

I don’t know much about the agreements players sign with their agents, but it seems possible to me that Correa could owe both past and current agents a percentage of this contract considering he didn’t change agents til the offseason had started. “You’ll get a better long term deal when you prove your health and keep more of it” feels like it could be persuasive.

Sportrac has the Cubs current payroll at $121m, 15th in baseball. Pathetic to think they couldn’t add his salary.

Their keeping the powder dry for a trade deadline acquisition :)

It is pathetic tho. Probably what…top 5 in ticket prices? Ridiculous

Bryan Smith does a good job with these depth charts. So adding Smyly in the rotation this is what it looks like now. Probably gonna be that way roughly to start the season with a few house keeping trades likely (bye Sergio Alcantara)

2nd I believe. Plus they own like 70% of the businesses adjacent to the park. Plus they got their TV network that was promised to bring revenue that goes back to the team. The Ricketts family are grifters and there are still people on Twitter defending them having a below average payroll for the 7th time in 11 seasons.

I get why we wouldn’t do this specific Correa deal, like we still should’ve but I could see wanting him here for at least 2-3 years before an opt out as an anchor for the next core. I don’t get why we wouldn’t have done a 6-8+ year deal with the opt outs tho, which you’d think he would’ve taken to have the fall back of more guaranteed money.

Right. Who know what really went on but based on the tweet I posted it sounds like they didn’t really push too hard for him and decided their apparent $125m payroll was better used spaced out. If the Cubs had a reasonable budget I think we would have Correa. But that’s ok 27 year old top 15 position players go on the market every season right? Right??
