I think I hate all of the guys who own and operate this franchise.

have you considered, they're having a lot of conversations. you can't assume that anything gets across the finish line. you try to keep a lot of balls in the air.

Now that Tatis is out, let's flip Simmons to the Padres in the never-ending combination of Hosmer/Myers/Contreras rumors.

A long, long time ago in a previous CBA there actually used to be a date before which you couldn't trade newly signed players. Not sure if that's still a thing or not. But I'm not able to think of any "sign-and-trade" situations off the top of my head.

With all the momentum about the Astros yesterday I fully expected him to have signed there already. Because he hasn’t to this point I’m wondering if there’s still a chance to get him

Call me crazy but I think he’s going to the Orioles. Sounds like a situation where they are going to overpay to get him to come there and will sell him on their farm system and being ready to contend in 1-2 years. It makes too much sense.

My faith in Mooney having this down solid is not terribly high, but as context for the Baez section of this article, he says as Simmons is slated to be the everyday SS: https://theathletic.com/3193757/2022/03/18/why-did-ex-cubs-stars-get-their-big-contracts-elsewhere-and-how-did-those-extension-offers-stand-up-in-free-agency/

Between that, Sharma being a little coy about the possibility of another significant move post-Suzuki, the relative quiet on Correa this week, and payroll still being within previous norms with a Correa deal, I’m starting to wonder.

10.8 bWAR in 369 games for them is pretty strong.

If the Cubs could somehow manage to sign Correra, even with a 1 year opt out I will personally refrain from criticizing management for the entire 2022 season.

Shouldn't that be enough to get this to the finish line?

I saw a Twitter report that Correra was unlikely to sign with the Astros. Come on Tommy and Jed, I know you're reading this. Get it done.

Sorry, my sarcasm was more about Machado spending some prime years on the dumpster fire that is the Orioles, not the value the Orioles got from Machado

Machado was drafted by the Orioles and the contract being discussed is the Padres contract.

I kinda have it in my head now that the Orioles will end up with Correa and then do the "Hosmer and prospects for nothing" trade with the Padres. It doesn't really make sense which I feel is why it will happen.

Oof, my baseball memory is not what it once was

I feel like it's entirely reasonable to feel like that 1% is missing (2) 0's and the the real likelihood of getting Correa is like 97.9992%. I mean we're Cub fans, and on some level building up to disappointment is like drinking water for us

What are the chances Jed has expertly read this market, knew CC wasn't getting a $300m deal and is waiting to pounce/bail him out with like a 7/$210m deal? Are we at 1% on that scenario, because that feels like what they are going for (typical Cubs pattern - hear about interest on a player, wait around, radio silence, "surprise" signing when price drops).

Is that impossible? No, but also I don’t see anything unique to the Cubs that they’ll be the final team standing. None of the other suitors(Houston, Yankees, Orioles) have made moves that make Correa less likely(certainly not any more than signing Simmons), so this theory rests on the assumption that the Cubs have had the best offer for months. Again, possible but not all that likely.
