I understand doing 2/90 or something crazy like that to lead off the deal changes the math substantially, but I can't imagine they get away with both less total dollars AND less AAV than Seager (or Lindor).

That said if this is the opening offer, it feels like Jed will get to a number that *does* do it. Maybe 8/276? Gives him the highest AAV for a shortstop (and I believe non-Trout position player), and that structure probably is roughly equivalent to a more straight up 8/300?

Guys this feels real

He could take the 2/90 and opt out and still get a 7 or 8 year contract.

If he's asking for 350 in (presumably) a fairly straight up deal I'd think something in the high 2's with a great AAV and a player-friendly structure should get the job done. Unless he's dead set on getting more raw dollars than Lindor/Seager as a matter of pride (not unreasonable).

This morning’s installment from David Schoenfield at ESPN lists the top ten remaining free agents, with Carlos Correa at the top. And where does Correa land? With the Chicago Cubs, of course:

So maybe that leaves the Blue Jays and Cubs. Before the lockout, the Blue Jays had pursued Seager and attempted to re-sign Marcus Semien before the Rangers added both players. Correa would be a significant defensive upgrade over Bo Bichette, who could slide over to second to form a dynamic middle infield duo. As for the Cubs, remember they signed Marcus Stroman and acquired Wade Miley, a sign they’re ready to move past their 2021 retooling season. If so, they still need an offensive cornerstone and Correa is the perfect fit — Nico Hoerner and Nick Madrigal have combined for five home runs in 638 career at-bats, so that’s two powerless middle infielders ….

Prediction: Cubs. The Cubs are the big-market team that best matches need with the payroll flexibility to blow away Correa with a big offer. The current payroll sits at $128 million, well below 2021’s $165 million, let alone 2019’s $237 million.

Not sourced stuff here but a lot of this is why I've been (cautiously blah blah blah) thinking he's ours since that last night before the lockout.

Is there some hidden meaning around the thread title?

yeah i've been wondering the same thing and if you don't get it i feel like less of an idiot

Translation: Carlos Correa is talking with the Chicago Cubs at this moment, just like I told you December 2nd. The Yankees and Cubs are the favorites for the stellar Puerto Rican shortstop.

Thinking out loud, this would be fun

- Sign Correa for ~$35M per

- Take Eric Hosmer off the Padres hands for one of their top prospects (Robert Hassell?) and one of their young MLB pitchers (Chris Paddack or Ryan Weathers; Paddack likely requires us to send a little value their way in the deal but that's still preferable IMO)

- Sign a LHH bat for super-sub duty, e.g. Brad Miller

- Sign two setup caliber relievers, let's say Andrew Chafin and Chris Martin just to have names

- Sign a swingman who would, if things work out right, be a pure reliever. I like Carlos Martinez here

Payroll is ~$200M, though may change significantly depending on how you structure Correa's deal.

Lineup:

2B - Madrigal

LF - Happ

DH - Schwindel

SS - Correa

C - Contreras

1B - Hosmer

3B - Wisdom

CF - Hoerner (he'll be doing a lot of roaming)

RF - Heyward

BN - Gomes, Miller, Frazier, Hermosillo

SP - Stroman, Hendricks, Paddack, Miley, Alzolay

RP - Wick, Martin, Chafin, Martinez, Wieck, Effross, Steele, Thompson

That team is solid, but obviously not much more than that. I do think that IF the team is good about self scouting, knowing if/when to pull the rip cord on the Wisdoms/Fraziers/Schwindels of the roster, they can be legitimately good. There's also Brennen Davis and Caleb Kilian lurking at Iowa. I think, given a significant infusion of talent in offseason 2.0 like above, there's a very good 25 man roster in the org. It's a matter though of figuring out what that looks like in May/June rather than taking until July/August.

It would require a bit more trade capital and you wouldn't net the prospect, but if you trade just for Paddack and then make a deal for say, Dom Smith, I think you get a similar/better current roster and are in a more likely range of what payroll is allowed to be.

Further to that point, adding someone like Miller and a Hosmer(or Smith) might be redundant depending on their belief in the other fringe LH bats(Heyward, Ortega or even Deichmann). So while I wouldn't mind 2 more LH hitters at all, you can probably trim one of them if you have to to make it fit since they aren't going to be the difference in a great or terrible 2022 or beyond.
