Yeah, I'm bored with this and he's using the Cubs to try to squeeze out a better offer from the Dodgers or something. I hope he signs with the Brewers or something just so they get that much more disappointed by third place.

What do they do with Kemp?

Cut him or try and get someone to take him and pay a few million each year of the deal

It seems like they do this all the time in the NBA but it's harder to pull off in baseball since the rosters are so much bigger.

Matt Kemp isn’t even worth having for free. If you’re an AL team, sure, he can be a passable DH for some small market bunghole, but I’d still rather have better than a 100-110 wRC+ guy as my DH. And if he’s forced to play the field at all, he’s a negative value player. He’s old and bad and somehow really fat now.

Yu is better at tipping his pitches than what the hell is going to happen the couple days of off-season left. And this whole process really concerns me with Jake. On the one hand I can see him being so pissed that his market depended on someone else that he has worked his tail off and gets his velo and control back, and it won't be with us. On the other hand, it could get him trying too hard like when he started talking about this off-season 2 years ago and he continues his spin into mediocrity with bouts of goodness. Both make me sad because I'll love Jake forever. He really made us all start to believe.

Can't say I'm real happy with how this is playing out because for me giving Darvish that 5th year over going a 4th year with Cobb is a no brainer.

If that is indeed the sticking point as some reports suggest, I wholeheartedly agree.

The only reason I can see for Theo/Jed still holding firm is if they have solid intel that Darvish doesn't really have a significantly better offer that would cause him to not eventually cave in and sign a 4-year deal.

Yeah I agree with both these points. If it’s ~25 on the aav I wouldn’t even have a problem going to 6 years with him so it’s kind of silly to me to hear (obviously rumors) we won’t go to 5 to get it done. Hopefully it is Theo just really feels he knows he has the best offer/only realistic place Yu wants to go.

Can you imagine if we somehow do get yu on a 4 year deal? I don't think it happens but that would be amazing.

Objectively, it's quite reasonable. A fifth year on a pitcher about to enter his age-32 season with a major arm injury and surgery in his past? Hell no.

But I'm bored and I want a good pitcher right now so I wouldn't care if they gave him 8 years.

The obvious conclusion to this nonsense is add a 5th year team option at $30 million that vests with reasonable benchmarks, yet only reachable if he's healthy/performs the first 4 years like ~175 avg IP over those 4 years and a healthy buyout (~$10 million) if the option isn't picked up or vests.

This isn't that hard, Theo!!!!!

Give Jake 5 years and move on. He helped us win a championship for the first time in 108 years. Nuf said.
