Not only are our front office executives better than all the other finalists, our manager is, too. Even having played in 3 straight NLCS, we can still offer him some serious stability going forward.. how many other teams can tell him who his entire infield will be for the next 3-4-5 years?

I think we have so many things going for us that other teams just can't match - mainly key individuals in key positions: Theo, Jed, Joe (his bosses) and Contreras, Rizzo, Bryant, Russell, Baez (his catcher and infield) and Happ (serial killer who wont murder teammates). And not only are they all very good at what they do but they appear to have fun while doing it.

I think Theo is going to get him.

I'm typically an optimist in general, but I don't think this is going to happen. That list of teams shows to me that he really wants to be in the west.

Obviously I hope I'm wrong.

Reading what's been said over the weekend it sounds like the Padres or Mariners if not the Cubs. Either of those would be the 2nd best option from an "effects the Cubs" standpoint. Angels would be next.

I don't know. If a Chicago isn't an acceptable location, the Cubs would have been eliminated. The Cubs might not get him but if he was ruling out Chicago, you'd think they wouldn't be on his list.

He eliminated every team that has Spring Training in Florida and about half the teams that train in AZ.

Flight time from XXX to Tokyo:

Seattle: 10h 40m

Chicago: 13h 20m

LA: 12h 10m

SD: 12h 10m

SF: 11h 20m

Honestly, it's not that much difference.

For someone like you that loves to fly, those extra couple hours are no big deal.

In all seriousness though, it's not like he's flying in the middle seat in coach on these flights.

Starting to feel like we've got a legit chance here.

We're probably set up to be the most competitive of any of the other teams (sans the Dodgers arguably) during his time here and he wouldn't have to compete with Kershaw as the "ace" or deal with comparisons to other Japanese players with the Cubs.

Think if he goes to the Mariners/Padres/Angels/Giants/Rangers that's not enough to make those teams great or playoff contenders every year.

Clearly there doesn't seem to a bias to an AL team and while it seems like he's interested in West Coast teams that's not a deal-breaker since we made the cut.

I've wanted to stay completely negative on this. And we're going to get him.

Why? We stick out like a sore thumb. We're still in it and based on the known criteria, we've got advantages. Then, you look at him being 23. Look at our damn roster, filled with World Series Champions his age, that are also ridiculously likeable guys.

We've never had the Japanese superstar. He can be our guy. We have a true need for a young ace. He can be that guy too. We've got a HOFer in Theo, to handle everything to keep us competitive. We've got Drinky Joe to keep things light and fun and to find ways to play him, that'll be fun and different for him. Between them, and whatever players we bring out to LA, we're going to dazzle him.

If anything, I think it looks like he chose all West Coast teams, to make it easier, when he picks us. Which I kind of figure he already has actually.

We're the perfect fit for him and he is keenly aware of this.

I'm just wondering if Theo brings Bryce to finish this presentation off for him.

Weird. I see the Cubs being the outlier in that regard to be a very good sign.

signs with Cubs: very very good

signs with Dodgers: very very bad

signs with anyone else: good luck buddy

nah it's not that big a deal

the biggest thing is what getting him would mean for us in terms of not having to trade from our mlb positional depth. if he goes elsewhere, it sucks just about equally for me. the dodgers are going to be great and run that division, regardless.

Anything that makes the Dodgers better is bad.

From the looks of the finalists, he wants to be on the west coast, but our front office is good enough to at least get a foot in the door. It's better than the alternative, but doesn't fill me with a bunch of confidence.

also, if that's all it was, you'd think the yankees would've gotten a foot in the door.

i still can't believe he rejected them off the bat, lmao

They're not in our division. Who cares?

I know this is your robot way of saying the playoffs are a crapshoot, but I don't think it's a particularly hot take to not want the best team in our league (who just beat our pants off in the playoffs) to get the best available player in the offseason.

i just think it's highly overstated by most people.

yeah, i'd rather the team we might play 4-7 times in the playoffs be slightly worse, but it's far from a huge downer for me outside of the fact that he wouldn't be picking us.

Their front office is not comparable to ours. Theo and Jed were presumably putting together a presentation about 25 year old stars and a world series trophy while cashman was rappelling down buildings like george costanza with a male crush on tony.

So after I just expressed my pessimism about this, I wonder if with all the money that he gave up, maybe living costs might be a factor here. He's gonna spend a lot more of his relatively small salary to live in Cali than he would in Seattle, Chicago or Texas.

chicago and seattle are right with LA in cost of living. San Fran is higher

His millions in endorsements, etc. should be just fine.

Chicago
