Wow. And Giants and Mariners are two finalists.

Wait...What? Seriously, the Giants and Mariners? Hmm, if the Giants get Stanton and Ohtani -- that's a damn good offseason for them.

Sounds pretty likely the Cubs are not getting him

So why are the Giants still being considered, but the Dodgers are out? The Dodgers are too big a market for Ohtani?

I'm happy the Yankees are no longer being considered. This news sucks, but I didn't think the Cubs had a great chance to land him anyway.

You have to remember this is a New Yorker being quoted. To people in NYC, everything west of New Jersey is basically the west coast and any city that’s not New York is a small market. We got this.

"He wanted to be in a small market so there's nothing we could do!"

*San Francisco immediately named as a finalist*

I'm sure there's at least a kernel of truth here and it might be part of why Ohtani doesn't come to Chicago, but really there needs to be more laughing at Cashman/New York right now

I'd be going nuts right now if I was an M's fan. They're a fringey wild card team as is, but add Ohtani and another big move (Lorenzo Cain?) and suddenly they look as good as anybody.

Same with the Giants. Stanton doesn't get them to the Dodgers level, but Stanton+Ohtani plus a decent 3B like Todd Frazier and they're right there.

Heck could they make a late play for Stanton if they got Ohtani? Not sure what sort of payroll they can afford

Chicago is on the West Coast of Lake Michigan. Just tell him the Cubs are in fact on the West Coast and don’t let him look at a map. Edited by champaignchris

My understanding is they have 20-30 mil to play with, so I'd think so. Though with them needing to play Cruz in the OF more to accommodate Ohtani, I doubt they'd go that direction.

Hmm ok this sounds promising

If true were still alive!

Just get Theo in a horsefeathering room with him, that’s all I ask

Hasn't Theo already been in a room with him, though? Didn't most teams schedule meetings with him in LA this weekend? I'm sure Theo and Jed met Ohtani and his agent when the Cubs did their presentation.

I think you might be mixing this up with the Stanton trade negotiations. I haven't heard about any team meeting in person with Ohtani.

He hasn't allowed teams to meet with him, I don't think. He's narrowing his list to the teams that he'll meet with.

There was no presentation yet. That’s what we are hoping the Cubs get to do.

I don’t think anyone has actually met with him or his reps. They’ve just sent in their questionnaire and maybe their presentation in PowerPoint or video form. He reviewed all those and is picking what 5 or so to go face to face meetings with now, I think.

Oh okay. Well, that's one of way of doing it I guess. I thought teams were getting short 30 minute sessions with Ohtani and his agents this weekend in LA.
