According to BaseballHeatMaps Heyward's average flyball distance is down from 276.98 ft. last year to 247.86 ft. this year. That's 6th worse out of qualified hitters. I think that shows he hasn't been getting unlucky with his HR/FB rate.

This was pleasant to run into given the season...Heyward as a CF this year:

.303/.365/.434 in 76 PAs with a 10.5% K rate

Career .797 OPS as a CF (201 PAs, 15% K rate)

why would this matter whatsoever

Because it's less natural of a position for him so he has to spend more time thinking about positioning etc and less time worrying about his struggles at the plate.

I'm completely kidding btw

Moving up the defensive spectrum and hitting? Why would it be completely and wholly irrelevant as opposed to a even a little bit of a positive indicator?

In 76 pa. He just happened to hit like that on days he played CF. there's no takeaway

That's why I included the K rate

Up the D spectrum

Good line

Better periph

Not looking for a big hot take, but I see it as a small indication of what we all probably know - that there's a good bat in there still.

the up the defensive spectrum part of it is what does not matter at all. it's a random collection of PA.

Clearly means hes focused more on defense in CF, so he is thinking less at the plate and just reacts... thus turning into a very good hitter & good CF at the same time.

Problem solved... Finally...

.868 ops in the last 7 games..a turning point???

Absolutely. Right n schedule too. He always starts slow. We're only 100+ games into the season.

they should think about having him pitch, he'd have to focus so much he'd be amazing at the plate

As of this morning, Fangraphs has Heyward at a 1.3 WAR, with him ranked as the 10th best defender in all of baseball. He's also the 50th best baserunner in all of baseball.

If the value of a win on the FA market is $8MM, he's already been worth over $10M in value in 2/3rds of a season (on pace for $15M) in which he has been batting like trash. We'll still get value out of this contract and anyone who thinks otherwise is just wrong, despite it being painful to watch him hit most of the time.

Damn right, even though I just looked up his splits, and everything about his second half numbers managing to somehow be even WORSE made me scream and melt like I just looked at Ark.

Yeah, his entire season is the biggest "eye test" I've ever seen. I literally hate watching him bat, but am at least realizing why he's still a valuable member of the team and likely worth his contract. It's not easy to reconcile.

It doesn't bug as much when some like, say, Castro would stink. The guy's just so likable, plus, like you said, he still brings value.

I don't get mad at him, and mostly just feel bad for Heyward. You can tell he's putting his very best out there, and it shows because the rest of his game hasn't suffered at all.

It's just a shame. His season is pretty much the only disappointing performance on the entire roster, we've gotten what we've expected, or better, out of every other position player or starting pitcher. It's like all the bad luck inhabited his pristine body.

It may just be me, but it seems like his frustrations are starting to boil over a bit more lately. He let out a loud "FUUUDDDGGGEE" or something the other day on a weak pop up, and he's slamming his bat after PAs. It's got to suck for him to see everyone else contributing to the offense but him.

But yeah, it would be legendary if he could somehow become red hot in October and carry us to a title.
